STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's fencing team posted the first-ever victory in program history with a 15-3 win over Hunter College this morning at the Wagner Invitational hosted by Wagner College at the Spiro Athletic Center in Staten Island, N.Y.
The Lyons improve to 1-12 on the season.
Wheaton piled up the points in the sabre, winning eight of nine bouts, while coming away with seven wins in nine bouts in foil.
First year Oliver Smink (Rochester, N.Y.) won all three of his bouts for the Lyons, including two wins by forfeit. He blanked senior Andy Gonzalez (Fort Pierce, Fla.), 5-0. Senior Ryan Daudelin (Duxbury, Mass.) recorded his first two collegiate bout wins by forfeit, before falling to Gonzalez, 5-0.
Wheaton first year Phillip Winston Nunnink (Kansas City, Mo.) won all three of his bouts to make him a perfect 6-0 on the day after taking three foil bouts against host Wagner earlier in the morning. Nunnink got by first year Isaac Ramirez (Staten Island, N.Y.), 5-1, in his first bout, before downing senior Isteaq Zim (Manhattan, N.Y.), 5-2. Nunnink's final bout of the day was a 5-3 triumph over sophomore David Xing (New York, N.Y.) to give him 17 straight victories dating back to November 23. First years Grant Smith (Oakland, Calif.) and Logan Perez (Randolph, N.J.) each won two of three bouts for the Lyons. Perez fell to Xing, 5-0, before rebounding with a pair of 5-4 battles. He defeated Ramirez and Zim in his final two bouts. Smith opened with a 5-2 win over Zim, before blanking Xing, 5-0. His only loss came to Ramirez, 5-1.
Wheaton returns to the strip on Saturday, February 1 when it travels to Evanston, Ill. to compete in the Northwestern Duals at host Northwestern University, while Hunter hosts City College of New York on December 6 at 7:00 p.m.
