STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's fencing foil squad posted a 6-3 margin, despite the Lyons bowing to host Wagner College, 19-8, in a dual match this morning at the Wagner Invitational at the Spiro Sports Center in Staten Island, N.Y.
Wheaton dips to 0-12, while the Seahawks improve to 8-9.
The Lyons were led in the foil by first year Phillip Winston Nunnink (Kansas City, Mo.), who won all three of his bouts. He earned a 5-2 decision over sophomore Benjamin Tan (East Lyme, Conn.), before blanking first year Liam Conroy (Staten Island, N.Y.), 5-0. He closed out his round with a 5-2 triumph over first year Emiliano Renteria (Tijuana, Mexico). First year Grant Smith (Oakland, Calif.) won two of three bouts for Wheaton. He began with a 5-2 effort against junior Diego Lara (Baja, Calif.) and surrendered just one point in a 5-1 win over Renteria. Tan edged Smith, 5-4, in the final bout. First year Logan Perez (Randolph, N.J.) picked up a win in three bouts for the Lyons. He suffered a 5-1 loss to Renteria, but bounced back with a 5-3 win over Tan. Perez fell to Lara, 5-1, in his final bout.
Wheaton picked up two more points in the sabre. First year
Oliver Smink (Rochester, N.Y.) won two of his three bouts. He began with a 5-2 showing against first year Broghan Bukowski (Washington, D.C.), but was defeated by sophomore Noah Beitel (Littleton, Colo.) by the same score. Smink's final bout was a 5-2 triumph over sophomore Theodore Huston (Chicago, Ill.). Senior
Ryan Daudelin (Duxbury, Mass.) was winless in his round for the Lyons. He battled in a 5-3 loss to Huston, before succumbing by a 5-0 count to Bukowski. His final bout was a 5-0 defeat by Beitel.
