NEW LONDON, Conn. — Senior diver Morgen Coughlin-Doyle (Topsham, Maine) placed first on both diving boards to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's swimming & diving team in a 173-111 loss at host United States Coast Guard Academy at Roland Pool in New London, Conn.
The Lyons suffered their first loss of the season to drop to 3-1, while the Bears improve to a perfect 5-0.
Wheaton won seven of 16 events during the meet.
Coughlin-Doyle tallied a winning score of 275.10 on the three-meter board in addition to racking up 259.05 points to claim first place on the one-meter board for the Lyons.
Seniors Reese Hartmann (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Katie Walz (Bellevue, Wash.) each scored 13 points for Wheaton. Hartmann touched first in the 100-yard backstroke and also finished second in the 200-yard backstroke with a mark of 2:10.36. Walz swam to victory in the 100-yard freestyle on a time of 55.28 in addition to a runner-up effort in the 50-yard freestyle with a mark of 25.23.
Junior Talia Dalton (Andover, Minn.) finished first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:20.58 to go with a third-place showing in the 200-yard freestyle for the Lyons. Junior Garin Stone (Barrington, R.I.) swam the fastest time in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:59.65 and also placed fourth in the 200-yard backstroke. Junior Vivian Van Holland (Excelsior, Minn.) won the 1000-yard freestyle in the first individual event of the night with a time of 11:03.08. Junior Emma Claire Lambert-Shemo (Cleveland, Ohio) finished as the runner-up in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:34.09 to go with a third-place showing in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Sophomore Madelyn Paxton (Mechanicsburg, Va.) tallied a meet-high 22 points to lead Coast Guard, including first-place efforts in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.22) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:13.12). She also finished second in the 100-yard backstroke. Senior Ellie Hiestand (Telford, Pa.) out-touched all swimmers in both breaststroke events with times of 1:08.83 in the 100-yard race and 2:28.94 in the 200-yard event.
First year Colleen Read (Annandale, Va.) placed first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:09.54 and finished second in the 200-yard butterfly and third in the 200-yard individual medley to give her 16 points for the Bears. Sophomore Megan Doubrava (Aurora, Colo.) posted a winning time of 2:12.65 in the 200-yard butterfly to go with a second-place swim in the 500-yard freestyle. First year Samantha Halvorson (Chesapeake, Va.) topped the field in the 50-yard freestyle with a mark of 25.02 in addition to a third-place effort in the 200-yard backstroke.
Coast Guard won both relays in the meet. Paxton, senior Tailyn Schaufelberger (Austin, Texas), senior Grace Keogh (Erie, Colo.) and Halvorson combined for a winning time of 4:02.19 in the 400-yard medley relay to open the night. Sophomore Kathleen O'Shea (Decatur, Ga.), Hiestand, Schaufelberger and Halvorson closed out the meet with a combined mark of 1:40.76 in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Wheaton returns to the pool tomorrow when it hosts Springfield College at Balfour Natatorium at 11:00 a.m. in Norton, Mass., while the Bears host Roger Williams University and Kean University on the same day at 12:00 p.m.
