Women's Volleyball Overcome by Emerson, 3-2

BOSTON, Mass. – The Emerson College women's volleyball team won the final two sets for a 3-2 (25-16, 16-25, 17-25, 25-14, 15-6) comeback win over visiting Wheaton College (Mass.) this evening in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at Brown & Plofker Gym in Boston, Mass.

The Lyons fall to 10-19 overall, including 1-9 in league play, while the Lions improve to 13-14 and 3-7.

Emerson hit .255 for the match, including .433 in the fourth set and a staggering .727 in the fifth frame, while Wheaton posted a .147 mark, but hit -.071 in the fourth and -.095 in the final set. The Lions were a formidable presence at the net as well with nine total blocks to the Lyons' count of two.

Junior outside hitter Celina Henn (Atwater, Calif.) led Wheaton with 17 kills to go with 11 digs and a trio of aces for Wheaton, while classmate Sydney Lyon (Weston, Conn.) put down 13 kills and added eight digs, a pair of aces and a block assist. Sophomore right side hitter Mary Caroline Mazzanti (New Orleans, La.) swung for eight kills in addition to a block assist and sophomore setter Ajsa Orbán (Budapest, Hungary) directed the offense with 30 assists to go with five digs and an ace. Sophomore libero Jackie Hochberg (Tampa, Fla.) picked up 17 digs.

Senior outside hitter Amelia Combs (Eugene, Ore.) led all players with 24 kills fueled by an impressive .447 hitting mark to go with four digs for Emerson. Senior middle hitter Brooke Maynez (Las Cruces, N.M.) spiked for 10 kills on a .280 hitting percentage and added a dig and three total blocks. First year setter Chloe Hokenson (McLean, Va.) registered a match-high 31 assists in addition to 10 digs for a double-double and got up for three block assists, while serving an ace. Graduate student defensive specialist Caroline Davis (Orlando, Fla.) got down for 19 digs to lead the contest.

The Lions won the fourth set 25-14 to knot the match and force a fifth set. The Lyons opened a 4-2 lead behind a pair of kills from Lyon early in the deciding frame. Emerson put together a dominant 13-2 run to close out the set, led by six kills from Combs, to take the frame, 15-6, and win the match, 3-2.

The Lions held a 13-10 lead midway through the opening set and did not trail for the remainder of the frame. Emerson scored the next three points with a kill from senior outside hitter Parker Cummings (Rochester, N.Y.) to give the home team a 16-10 margin. The Lions later maintained a 20-14 cushion, before ending the frame with a 5-2 spurt, including a trio of kills from Combs, to take a 1-0 match lead.

Wheaton took the next two sets to secure a 2-1 match edge. The Lyons scored three of the first four points of the opening frame of the second set, before Emerson came back with five of six points, paced by a pair of kills from Maynez, to take a 6-4 lead. Wheaton matched the surge with five of the next six points, including a pair of kills from Henn, to give it the lead for good at 9-7. The Lyons later maintained a 17-15 margin, before closing out the set with an 8-1 blitz, led by three kills each from Henn and Lyon, to claim the set at 25-16.

The Lions opened the third set with a 3-1 margin, including a pair of aces from first year setter Sophia Schiappa (Burr Ridge, Ill.). Wheaton topped its host with five unanswered points, paced by a pair of kills from Mazzanti, to take a 6-3 lead. Schiappa later fired an ace to even the set at 11-11 for Emerson, but the Lyons took a 16-14 margin and did not trail for the remainder of the frame. Wheaton finished the set with a 9-3 run, including two kills and a pair of aces from Henn, for a 25-17 set win.

The Lyons took a 5-3 lead early in the fourth set, but it was their last advantage of the frame. The Lions ripped off the next five points, including a pair of kills from Combs, to take an 8-5 lead. Lyon put down a kill to bring Wheaton within 9-7, before Emerson put together an 11-4 stretch to increase its cushion to 20-11. The Lyons scored the next two points to cut the deficit to 20-13, but the Lions scored five of the final six points to win the set at 25-14 and tie the match at 2-2.

Wheaton returns to action on Saturday, November 9 when it hosts NEWMAC rival Worcester Polytechnic Institute for Senior Day in the season finale at 11:00 a.m. at Emerson Gymnasium, while Emerson hosts Salve Regina University for conference action on the same day at 1:00 p.m.
