MADISON, N.J. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's fencing team dropped all five matches in its first-ever series of dual matches at the Drew Invitational hosted by Drew University at the Simon Forum in Madison, N.J.
The Lyons fell to Lafayette College, 23-4, Haverford College, 18-9, Long Island University Brooklyn, 21-6, Drew University, 18-9 and Stevens Institute of Technology, 20-7.
Wheaton was led by first years Grant Smith (Oakland, Calif.) and Phillip Winston Nunnink (Kansas City, Mo.), who both posted a 10-5 record for the day in the foil. First year Oliver Smink (Rochester, N.Y.) registered a 9-6 mark in the sabre. Sophomore Julian Fencil (Guilford, Conn.) finished the day with a 4-11 record, while first year Logan Perez (Randolph, N.J.) and senior Ryan Daudelin (Duxbury, Mass.) both won a bout in 15 matches.
The Lyons won three bouts in the foil against Lafayette, led by two wins from Nunnink. He defeated Chris Davis (Sacramento, Calif.), 5-3, and senior Benito Hergert (Somerville, N.J.), 5-2. His only loss was to senior Amir Whitehead (Baltimore, Md.), 5-3. Smith also defeated Davis, 5-0, but was edged by both Hergert and Whitehead by scores of 5-4. Perez lost 5-0 to Davis, Hergert and Whitehead. Smink picked up Wheaton's only sabre win with a 5-4 effort against sophomore Sam Gilpin. He was edged by first year Nikita Kegan (Watchung, N.J.), 5-4, and was downed by first year Jordan Ginsberg (White Plains, N.Y.), 5-2. Fencil was defeated by both Ginsberg and Kegan, 5-2, and fell to Gilpin, 5-1. Daudelin dropped 5-1 decisions to both Ginsberg and Kegan in addition to a 5-0 loss to Gilpin.
The Lyons bested Haverford in the sabre bouts, 5-4. Smink was 2-1 with a 5-0 win over sophomore Greg Roumiantsev (Southborough, Mass.) and a 5-1 victory over senior Deep Patel (Bristol, Pa.). He was defeated by senior Jack Greff (New York, N.Y.), 5-1. Fencil won two of three bouts as well with a 5-1 triumph over Roumiantsev and a 5-3 effort over Patel. He fell to Greff, 5-2. Daudelin picked up his first career win over Roumiantsev, 5-3, but was defeated by Greff, 5-1, and Patel, 5-0. Nunnink led Wheaton in the foil, winning two of three bouts. He defeated both sophomore Henry Bishop (Falmouth, Maine) and first year Ezra Weintroub (Brookline, Mass.) by tallies of 5-2, before being edged by junior Henry Fedonchik (New York, N.Y.), 5-4. Perez picked up a 5-3 win over Bishop, but was downed by junior Andrew Strayer (Wayne, Pa.), 5-3, and Fedonchik, 5-1. Smith blanked Weintroub, 5-0, but was edged by both Fedonchik and first year Dean Myers (San Francisco, Calif.), 5-4.
Wheaton edged LIU in the foil bouts, 5-4, led by Smith with a perfect 3-0 mark. He recorded a 5-1 win over Louro Prosoli in addition to victories over Brendan Wadley (5-2) and Andrew Gefell (5-4). Nunnink won two of three bouts, earning a 5-2 decision over Wadley and a 5-4 win over Prosoli. His only defeat was a close 5-4 loss to Gefell. Perez was edged by both Prosoli and Gefell, 5-4 in addition to a 5-1 loss to Wadley. Smink picked up the Lyons' only win in sabre with a 5-3 showing over Detchie Diop. He was nipped by Tai Flot, 5-4 and lost to Eduardo Duarte, 5-1. Fencil was stopped by Diop, 5-2, and suffered a pair of 5-1 defeats to Flot and Duarte. Daudelin was blanked, 5-0, by Flot, Diop and Duarte.
Wheaton won five of nine sabre bouts against host Drew. Smink won all three bouts, including a pair of 5-1 victories over first year Jason Ahlman (Swedesboro, N.J.) and sophomore Logan Kleva (Lindenhurst, N.J.). His other win was a 5-2 decision over first year Jack Henderson (Chicago, Ill.). Fencil won two of three bouts with a 5-3 win over Kleva and a 5-4 effort against Henderson. He was downed by Ahlman, 5-3. Daudelin was edged by Ahlman, 5-4, and set back by Kleva, 5-2, and first year Bryan Cipriano-Goines (Bayonne, N.J.), 5-1. Nunnink and Smith both won two of three bouts in foil. Nunnink shut out senior Aidan Montalbine (Sayville, N.Y.), 5-0, and edged first year Paul Greenleaf (Guilford, Conn.), 5-4. His only defeat was a 5-3 decision to first year Andrew Klyczek (Chesapeake, Va.). Smith cruised past Greenleaf, 5-1, and defeated Klyczek, 5-3. Montalbine got the best of him, 5-1. Perez suffered 5-1 losses to Greenleaf, Klyczek and Montalbine.
The Lyons closed the day by winning five of nine foil bouts against Stevens. Smith won all three of his bouts, including a 5-2 win over junior James Glover (Red Bank, N.J.), a 5-3 triumph against first year Alan Hu (Roseland, N.J.) and a 5-4 effort over sophomore Liam Thomas (Wanaque, N.J.). Nunnink blanked Glover, 5-0, and defeated Hu, 5-1, but was denied by first year David Trubetski (Newtown, Pa.), 5-0. Perez suffered 5-2 losses to Hu and Thomas in addition to a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Glover. Smink captured two of three foil bouts for Wheaton with a 5-0 win over sophomore Tyler Kometani (Long Valley, N.J.) and a 5-1 victory over first year Chinli Ong (Jersey City, N.J.). He was defeated by, 5-2, by senior John Morreale (Wall, N.J.). Daudelin dropped a 5-2 decision to Morreale, was downed by Ong, 5-1, and fell to Kometani, 5-0. Fencil was downed by Ong, 5-3, in addition to a 5-1 loss to Kometani and a 5-0 setback to Morreale.
The Lyons return to action on November 23 in a Northeast Fencing Conference competition hosted by Brown University in Providence, R.I.
