PROVIDENCE, R.I. — First year Phillip Winston Nunnink (Kansas City, Mo.) was a perfect 9-0 to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's fencing team on the second day of a Northeast Fencing Conference meet at host Brown University's Olney-Margolies Athletic Center in Providence, R.I.
The Lyons fell in three matches and are now 0-11 on the season.
Winston Nunnink finished the weekend with a 15-3 record for Wheaton. Classmate Grant Smitih (Oakland, Calif.) was outstanding as well, going 7-2 for the day and was 12-6 over the two days of competition.
The Lyons dropped their opening match, 19-8, to Vassar College, which is ranked seventh in the nation in the most recent United States Fencing Coaches Association national rankings. Wheaton did its damage in the foil with a 6-3 record foil bouts. Nunnink dropped just four points in his round. He turned in a pair of 5-2 wins in his first two bouts with wins over senior Brady Traugot (New York, N.Y.) and first year Kahlil Salome (Austin, Texas). He capped his round with a 5-0 win over first year Alexander Gobbo (Santa Ana, Calif.). Smith took two of three bouts, defeating Salome, 5-1, and Traugot, 5-3, to bookend a 5-2 loss to Gobbo. First year Logan Perez (Randolph, N.J.) ended his round with a 5-0 victory over Salome, but was edged by Gobbo, 5-4, and fell to Traugot, 5-1. First year Oliver Smink (Rochester, N.Y.) led Wheaton's sabre contingent with a pair of wins. He nipped David Sargardi Diaz (Barcelona, Spain), 5-4, and also recorded a 5-2 triumph over first year Karthik Shankar (Bethesda, Md.). His only defeat was a narrow 5-4 setback to first year Devan McCarthy (Dix Hills, N.Y.). Sophomore Julian Fencil (Guilford, Conn.) was defeated by counts of 5-1 to both Shankar and McCarthy. He was upended by Sargardi Diaz, 5-2. Senior Ryan Daudelin (Duxbury, Mass.) was defeated by McCarthy, 5-2, before falling to both Shankar and Sargardi Diaz by scores of 5-0.
Nunnink continued to roll against Brandeis University. The Lyons were defeated by the Judges, 21-6, but Nunnink led a foil group that posted a 6-3 mark. He opened with a 5-1 win over senior Griffith Werwa (Linvington, N.J.), before taking down first year Alex Fortune (Alto, Mich.) with a 5-2 effort. Nunnink cruised past first year Brandon Zhao (Melrose, Mass.) by a count of 5-2. Smith was also impressive, winning two of three bouts. He was edged by Fortune, 5-4, but finished strong with a 5-1 showing over Zhao and blanked Werwa, 5-0. Perez also picked up a win over Werwa, dropping just one point. Perez suffered a pair of 5-2 losses to Zhao and Fortune. Wheaton was shut out in the sabre bouts. Daudelin was handed a pair of 5-1 defeats by sophomore Alex Piwowar (Westford, Mass.) and senior Anthony Rabinkov (Centennial, Colo.). His final bout ended in a 5-0 loss to junior Seth Edelman (New York, N.Y.). Smink picked up a point in a 5-1 loss to Edelman, but he was unable to score against both Rabinkov and Piwowar. Fencil was saddled with 5-0 defeats at the hands of Edelman, Piwowar and Rabinkov.
The Lyons capped the meet with a 21-6 loss to No. 4 Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Once again, Wheaton's foil carried it with a 6-3 margin over the Engineers. Nunnink continued his undefeated day with three straight victories, starting with a 5-2 win over junior Niles Liu (Bedford, Mass.), before setting down sophomore Michael Samuel (Philadelphia, Pa.), 5-1. He closed the day by edging senior Richard Lin (Melville, N.Y.). The two combatants were tied at 4-4 at the end of three minutes, but Nunnink took the decision with the deciding point in extra time. MIT swept the Lyons in the sabre, winning all nine bouts, including three by forfeit. Smink was defeated by senior Henry Smith (Columbia Falls, Mont.), 5-2, and was saddled with a pair of 5-1 losses by first year Zachard Tong (Marietta, Ga.) and first year Eric Wang (Foothill Ranch, Calif.). Daudelin was handed a pair of 5-1 defeats as well, falling to Smith and Wang. Tong registered a 5-0 decision over Daudelin.
Wheaton returns to action on Sunday, December 1 when it travels to Staten Island, N.Y. to compete in the Seahawk Invitational at host Wagner College.
