PROVIDENCE, R.I. — First year Phillip Winston Nunnink (Kansas City, Mo.) led the Wheaton College (Mass.) fencing team in three dual matches at a Northeast Fencing Conference meet at host Brown University's Olney-Margolies Athletic Center in Providence, R.I.
The Lyons dropped all three matches to fall to 0-7.
Winston Nunnink was 6-3 in the foil for Wheaton.
The Lyons began the day with a 23-4 loss to Sacred Heart University. First year Grant Smith (Oakland, Calif.) won two of three bouts in the foil for Wheaton. He edged sophomore Chaissen Costello (Tiverton, R.I.), 5-4, before taking down senior Jacob Bartel (La Mesa, Calif.), 5-2. He was nipped, 5-4, by junior David Belluomo. Winston Nunnink picked up the Lyons' other point with a 3-2 win over Costello. He was defeated by Bartel, 5-3, and by Belluomo, 5-1. First year Logan Perez (Randolph, N.J.) was snipped by Bartel, 5-4 in addition to a 5-3 loss to Belluomo and a 5-1 defeat to Costello. Sophomore Julian Fencil (Guilford, Conn.) notched Wheaton's only win in the sabre with a 5-4 triumph over first year Zander Wolmart. He suffered 5-3 losses to first year Jett Londell (Holmdel, N.J.) and first year Michael DiMatteo (Monroe, Conn.). First year Oliver Smink (Rochester, N.Y.) was downed by both Wolmart and Londell by a count of 5-2. He was defeated by DiMatteo, 5-3. Senior Ryan Daudelin (Duxbury, Mass.) was set back by both Londell and Wolmart with a 5-1 decision in addition to falling to DiMatteo, 5-0.
The Lyons tallied a season-high 10 points in a 17-10 loss to Wagner College. Wheaton dominated the foil, winning eight of nine bouts. Smith and Nunnink were both unbeaten in their three bouts. Nunnink dropped just four total points and began the match with a 5-0 win over first year Liam Conroy (Staten Island, N.Y.), before dropping just a point in a 5-1 victory over first year Emiliano Renteria (Tijuana, Mexico). He finished by edging junior Diego Lara (Baja, Calif.), 4-3. Smith defeated Lara, 5-2, before blanking Conroy, 5-0. He added a 5-3 win over Renteria. First year Logan Perez (Randolph, N.J.) picked up a 5-3 win over Lara and edged Conroy, 5-4. His only loss was to Renteria, 5-3. Smink won two of three bouts in the sabre. He edged first year Broghan Bukowski (Washington, D.C.), 5-4, and added a 5-3 triumph over sophomore Noah Beitel (Littleton, Colo.). His only defeat came at the hands of sophomore Flavio Vinci (Grottaferrata, Italy) by a count of 5-2. Fencil suffered a 5-0 loss to Vinci and 5-1 decision to Bukowski in addition to falling, 5-2, to Beitel. Daudelin was saddled with a pair of 5-1 defeats to Bukowski and sophomore Charlie Dolan (Medway, Mass.). Vinci handed him a 5-0 loss as well.
Nunnink won two of three foil matches in a 23-4 loss to Boston College. He defeated senior Ryan Ho (Bernardsville, N.J.), 5-2, before taking down senior Daniel Hong (Irvine, Calif.), 5-1. His only setback came against sophomore Christian Ko (Hong Kong, China), 5-1. Perez earned a 5-4 victory over senior Levi Hughes (Houston, Texas). He was defeated by Ho, 5-3, and Hong, 5-0. Smith was edged by Hong, 5-4, before dropping a 5-3 decision to Ko. He was also downed by graduate student Colin Yu (Acton, Mass.). Smink registered Wheaton's only point in the sabre with a 5-2 effort over senior Adam Yang (Belmont, Mass.). He was edged by sophomore Kaden Ho (Jericho, N.Y.), 5-4, and defeated by first year William Kilgallen (Weston, Mass.), 5-1. Fencil suffered 5-2 losses to Ho, first year William Xu (Los Altos, Calif.) and Kilgallen. Daudelin was defeated by counts of 5-2 to both Xu and Ho in addition to a 5-0 loss to Kilgallen.
The Lyons return to Brown University tomorrow for the second day of the Northeast Fencing Conference meet.
