Women's Soccer Shuts Out Coast Guard in 0-0 Draw on Senior Day

NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's soccer team played visiting United States Coast Guard Academy to a 0-0 draw this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference action at Mirrione Stadium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.

The Lyons are now 8-4-7 overall to set a new school standard for ties in a season, while finishing the conference slate at 4-2-5 to secure the number five seed in the NEWMAC Championship Tournament. The Bears conclude their season at 2-10-6 and 2-5-4.

Wheaton advances to play fourth-seeded Babson College on Tuesday, November 5 at Babson Park, Mass. for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.

The Lyons recognized their seniors prior to the match with a ceremony to highlight Natalie Coughlin (Philadelphia, Pa.), Lauren DiTullio (Hanover, Mass.), Allison Kramer (Irvine, Calif.) and Lily Brown (Warwick, R.I.).

Wheaton owned a 14-10 shot advantage, including 9-5 in the second half and doubled Coast Guard with four corner kicks to the visitors' tally of two.

Junior keeper Patricia Bandrup (Poway, Calif.) posted her seventh shutout of the season and ninth of her career with six saves for the Lyons. Senior goalie Emily Scharnitzky (Charleston, S.C.) closed her career with the Bears by stopping all eight shots she faced to post her 10th lifetime blank sheet, including five in 2024.

DiTullio led Wheaton's offensive effort with a game-high five shots, while sophomore midfielder Lulu Vlases (Bozeman, Mont.) directed a pair of shots on frame for Coast Guard.

The Lyons threatened to score in the 17th minute of the match when sophomore forward Mackenna Reynolds (Longmeadow, Mass.) fired a shot on net, but Scharnitzky made a diving stop at the right post to keep the contest scoreless for the Bears.

Wheaton junior forward Kate Wickenheisser (Oxford, Conn.) put pressure on the Coast Guard defense when she carried the ball into its defensive zone with a mission to put a crooked number on the board less than 10 minutes into the second half, but a Bear defender cut her off before she could cause any anxiety for the visitors.

The Lyons continued to stalk their opponent's net in the final minutes looking for a score. Junior forward Julia Sternat (Ellington, Conn.) lifted a shot from the top right corner of the box to the far left post, but Scharnitzky was able to lift up and bat the ball away. Wheaton's last gasp came off a corner kick when Sternat served a ball from the left corner to the front of the goalmouth to a crashing Maya Thomas (Goffstown, N.H.), but the sophomore's shot went high over the crossbar to keep the game a scoreless draw.
