No. 21 Men's Soccer Posts Fifth Straight Shutout in 0-0 Tie at Endicott

BEVERLY, Mass. -- The No. 21 Wheaton College (Mass.) men's soccer team registered its fifth straight shutout in a 0-0 draw at host Endicott College this evening at Hempstead Stadium in Beverly, Mass.

The Lyons, who are ranked in the most recent United Soccer Coaches national poll, are now 6-3-3 on the season, while the Gulls are 6-4-2.

Wheaton's streak of five consecutive blank sheets is its longest stretch of shutouts since five in a row from September 12-23, 2015. The Lyons have not allowed a goal since September 17 – a span of 480:24 for its longest stretch without surrendering a goal since 2015.

Wheaton controlled the majority of the match at Endicott, out-shooting its host by a count of 22-6, including 13-2 in the first half. Both teams were awarded four corner kicks.

The Lyons threatened to score with four shots in a span of 80 seconds in the 31st minute of play. Sophomore back Owen Kane (Pembroke, Mass.) fired a shot that was denied with 14:45 left in the opening half, before senior back Jonathan DiDario (Scotch Plains, N.J.) put a shot on frame that was also saved just 30 seconds later. Sophomore midfielder Declan Rhatigan (Holderness, N.H.) redirected a serve from Joey Everett (Danbury, Conn.) off a corner kick with a header that went wide, before senior back Ryan Bell's (Berwyn, Pa.) shot was blocked with 13:25 left in the half.

First year forward Gael Vera (Westminster, Mass.) also put pressure on the Gull defense for Wheaton with a shot that caught too much of the crossbar with 50 ticks left in the first stanza, before his rebound shot was turned back by Endicott first year goalie Brady O'Toole (Concord, Mass.) with under 50 seconds to play in the half. Vera finished with a match-high four shots for the Lyons.

Wheaton made one last push for a win in the final 30 seconds of the match with back-to-back blocked shots in a span of eight seconds from Kane and Vera.

In the 66th minute, junior midfielder Conor Rooney (Monroe, Conn.) was inches away from a scoring opportunity for the Gulls as he maneuvered around two Lyons defenders and fired a shot that sailed right above the crossbar.

Wheaton junior keeper Michael O'Gara (Ardmore, Pa.) stopped a pair of shots to record his fifth shutout of the season and 15th of his career to tie for fifth on the Lyons' all-time list, while O'Toole made seven saves for his fifth blank sheet of 2024.

Wheaton returns to action on Saturday, October 12 when it travels to Worcester, Mass. to take on New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference foe Worcester Polytechnic Institute at 1:00 p.m., while Endicott hosts Gordon College on the same day at 3:00 p.m.
