Men's Soccer Plays Salve Regina to 1-1 Draw

NORTON, Mass. – Sophomore midfielder Declan Rhatigan (Holderness, N.H.) tallied the only goal for the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's soccer team in a 1-1 tie against visiting Salve Regina University this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at Keefe Field on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.

The Lyons are now 6-5-6 overall and 1-2-4 in league play, while the Seahawks stand at 8-7-2 and 3-1-2.

Wheaton held a 12-11 shooting edge for the match and owned a 4-1 margin on corner kicks.

Both goals in the game came within 77 seconds of each other in the first four-plus minutes of the second half.

Sophomore forward Daniel Goba (North Kingstown, R.I.) netted the only goal for Salve Regina.

Junior midfielder Aidan Doyle (Kingston, Mass.) served a ball from the left sideline into the goalmouth, where it was popped up into the air to set up Rhatigan for a bicycle kick that he converted into the right corner of the net for the Lyons. The marker came just 2:50 into the second session and was the second score of the season for Rhatigan.

The lead was short lived for Wheaton with the Seahawks scoring just 77 seconds later to knot the match at 1-1. Goba was able to take the ball away from a Lyon defender just short of midfield in the home team's defensive zone and carried the ball into the box. He ripped a shot past the outstretched Wheaton keeper and inside the right post for his 12th goal of the season.

Each team put shots on frame for the remainder of the match, but nothing that was a cause for concern for either keeper.

Junior goalie Michael O'Gara (Ardmore, Pa.) finished with three saves for the Lyons, while first year keeper Adonis Santiago (Oakdale, Conn.) stopped five shots for Salve Regina.

Wheaton returns to the pitch on Saturday, November 2 when it hosts NEWMAC foe Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Keefe Field at 2:00 p.m. on Senior Day, while the Seahawks host Springfield College on the same day at 1:00 p.m. in conference action.
