Bandrup Leads Women's Soccer in 0-0 Shutout Draw at Smith

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Junior keeper Patricia Bandrup (Poway, Calif.) turned away 11 shots to record a shutout in a 0-0 draw at host Smith College this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play in Northampton, Mass.

The Lyons are now 7-4-6 overall to tie the school-record for ties in a season set during the 2012 campaign when Wheaton posted an 18-2-6 mark. The Lyons sit at 3-2-4 in league play. The Pioneers stand at 6-8-2 and 5-2-2.

Smith held a 12-4 shooting advantage and owned a 6-3 margin in corner kicks.

Bandrup posted her sixth blank sheet of the season and eighth of her career for Wheaton, while junior goalie Skylar Smith (Carlisle, Mass.) stopped all four shots she faced to record her sixth season shutout and ninth of her tenure for the Pioneers.

Both teams threatened to score during the match.

Wheaton junior forward Kate Wickenheisser (Oxford, Conn.) looked to put the Lyons on the board early in the opening half in the 12th minute of play. She carried the ball down the right side on a breakaway, before firing a shot ticketed for inside the near right post, but Smith was there to stop the try for the home team.

The Pioneers had a quality chance snuffed out by Bandrup in the 69th minute of action. First year midfielder Maura Grazioso (Manchester, Vt.) sent a thru-ball into the box that classmate Charli Kellaway (Derby, Vt.) ran onto, but Bandrup came off her line to close the gap and was able to smother Kellaway's shot to keep the contest scoreless for Wheaton.

The Lyons threatened one more time with 7:59 to play in the match when junior midfielder Julia Sternat (Ellington, Conn.) uncorked a high shot from 22 yards out that was denied by Smith, who leapt into the air to bat the ball away.

The Pioneers also looked to put a crooked number on the scoreboard in the waning minutes on a corner kick with a set piece. Senior back Raven Tebbetts (North Haven, Conn.) lifted a ball to the right post from the left corner flag, where sophomore defender Una Keller (Davis, Calif.) connected with a header, but Bandrup was there for the stop to keep the double shutout intact for both sides.

Wheaton returns to the pitch on Wednesday, October 30 when it hosts NEWMAC foe Clark University at Mirrione Stadium for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff, while Smith heads to nearby South Hadley, Mass. to play Mount Holyoke College on the same day at 7:00 p.m.
