SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Junior forward Katie Wickenheisser (Oxford, Conn.) scored to give the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's soccer team a 1-1 tie at host Mount Holyoke College this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference action at MHC Soccer Field in South Hadley, Mass.
The Lyons are now 6-4-5 overall and 2-2-3 in league play, while MHC is 3-4-5 and 0-2-3.
Wheaton held a 17-12 shot advantage and was awarded the only corner kick of the match.
The Lyons got on the board as time wound down in the opening half. Senior forward Lily Brown (Warwick, R.I.) sent a thru-ball from midfield into the box, where Wickenheisser beat the keeper to the ball and tapped a shot into the back of the net with just seven ticks showing on the clock for a 1-0 edge.
Mount Holyoke evened the game with 17:02 remaining in the contest. A looping entry ball into Wheaton's penalty area was misplayed by a defender, allowing senior forward Hannah Ellis (Londonderry, N.H.) to control the ball and take it to the end line. A perfectly placed left-footed cross passed the face of the goal before junior forward Jessica Drent (Kapa'a, Hawaii) charged in to meet it with her forehead, driving the ball into the right-side netting to tie the score at 1-1. The assist was the first of Ellis's career.
Junior keeper Patricia Bandrup (Poway, Calif.) turned away four shots for the Lyons, while junior goalie Clarissa Govea (Pico Rivera, Calif.) made seven saves for MHC.
Wheaton returns to action on Wednesday, October 23 when it hosts NEWMAC foe Salve Regina University at Mirrione Stadium for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff, while Mount Holyoke heads to Worcester, Mass. on the same day to take on league rival Clark University at 7:00 p.m.
