Men's Swimming Falls at Bentley, 150.5-111.5, in Season Opener

WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's swimming & diving team was defeated by host Bentley University, 150.5-111.5, this evening at the Dana Center Pool in Waltham, Mass.

The Lyons slip to 0-1 on the season, while the Falcons improve to 1-0 in the season-opener for both teams.

Wheaton won six events during the meet.

Junior Gavin Cullinan (Cummings, Ga.) led the Lyons with a pair of first-place finishes, including a win in the 200-yard freestyle to give Wheaton its largest lead of the night at 30-25 after registering a top time of 1:45.51. Cullinan also placed first in the 200-yard backstroke later in the night with a mark of 1:57.53.

Junior Brian Hixson (Scituate, Mass.) tallied 13 points for the Lyons with a victory in the 100-yard freestyle, after clocking in at 47.62, and a pair of third-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly. Sophomore Kevin Rice (Vienna, Va.) totaled 14 points for the visitors after touching first in the 1000-yard freestyle fueled by a time of 10:26.08 and placing second in the 500-yard freestyle with a mark of 5:06.98. He also added a fifth-place effort in the 200-yard individual medley. Senior Anton Lopez (Oakland, Calif.) also picked up a win with a clip of 21.43 in the 50-yard freestyle to go with a second-place showing in the 100-yard freestyle behind a time of 48.88. 

Wheaton closed the meet with a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Hixson led off the race, before yielding to senior Sean Hill (Ellsworth, Maine). Cullinan followed to set up Lopez with the final 50 yards to come from behind and give the Lyons a win by just 1.4 tenths of a second with a combined mark of 1:26.18.

Junior Andrew Tran (Milton, Mass.) scored in three different events for Wheaton to contribute with 11 points after picking up second-place finishes in both the 200-yard breaststroke (2:16.60) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:02.92) in addition to a third-place effort in the 100-yard backstroke.

Senior Kenneth Ryu (Los Angeles, Calif.) and classmate Calvin Ye (Port Washington, N.Y.) each claimed a pair of first-place finishes to lead Bentley. Ryu topped the field in both breaststroke races with a time of 59.41 in the 100 and 2:15.27 in the 200, while Ye touched first in the 100-yard backstroke (52.96) and the 100-yard butterfly (51.91).

Ye and Ryu led off the 200-yard medley relay to open the meet for the Falcons, before first years Zachary Ellis (Westfield, Mass.) and Ethan Rehkopf (Pittsford, N.Y.) closed out the event to give the home team a winning combined mark of 1:35.63.

The Lyons return to the pool on Friday, November 1 when they host Bridgewater State University at 6:00 p.m. in Balfour Natatorium, while Bentley heads to Babson Park, Mass. to take on Babson College on October 26 at 12:00 p.m.
