Field Hockey Takes Down Clark, 4-1

NORTON, Mass. -- Four different players scored to power the Wheaton College (Mass.) field hockey team in a 4-1 victory over visiting Clark University this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at Nordin Field on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.

The Lyons improve to 7-5 overall and 1-4 in conference play, while the Cougars fall to 5-7 and 1-4.

Wheaton held a 17-10 shot advantage, while owning an 8-7 edge in penalty corners.

The Lyons scored the first three markers of the game – all in the first half, before Clark tallied its only score in early in the fourth quarter. Wheaton added an insurance goal in the fourth quarter.

First year midfielder Kayla Wilonski (Wallingford, Conn.), sophomore forward Hannah Fortin (South Dartmouth, Mass.), junior forward Riley Levrault (Lakeville, Mass.) and senior forward Delia Knox (Cumberland, Maine) each scored for the home team. Wilsonski and Levrault both added an assist to their respective efforts.

Graduate student forward Greer McCarty (White River Junction, Vt.) registered the lone goal for the Cougars.

The Lyons opened the scoring less than 10 minutes into the game on a penalty corner situation. Levrault sent the insert pass to Wilonski at the top of the arc, where she maneuvered around a few Clark defenders, before unleashing a shot from just inside the arc that found the back of the cage. The marker was her third of the year and gave Wheaton a 1-0 lead with 5:26 to go in the first quarter.

The Lyons took advantage of another penalty corner when sophomore midfielder Maria Worden (Burlington, Vt.) fired a shot in front of the cage from 10 yards out that was redirected in front by Fortin for her second goal of the season and a 2-0 lead.

Wheaton took a three-goal margin just 53 seconds before the intermission. Wilonski carried the ball deep into the Cougars' defensive zone, before zipping a perfectly placed cross to Levrault in the right slot, where she completed the sequence with her team-leading sixth goal of the season.

Clark got on the board with a goal coming just 3:51 into the final period of the day. McCarty picked off a pass inside the arc, took two steps toward the cage and fired a successful shot into the left corner of the cage from eight yards out for her sixth marker of the season to make it 3-1.

Levrault sent a cross to the front of the goalmouth that the Cougar keeper sprawled out for, but the ball slipped by her stick to find Knox, who fired a shot into the back of the cage for her fifth goal of the year and a 4-1 Lyon lead.

Wheaton sophomore keeper Grace Ferguson (Williston, Vt.) made four saves on the day for the home team. Sophomore starting goalie Rachel Reiter (Millburn, N.J.) stopped six of nine shots in the opening half for Clark, before yielding to junior Alexandra Cacciapaglia (Ridgefield, Conn.), who allowed one goal in the second stanza.

The Lyons return to play tomorrow when they host University of New England on Nordin Field at 12:00 p.m., while the Cougars head to Weston, Mass. on October 14 for a 1:00 p.m. start.
