NORTON, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) field hockey team was defeated by visiting University of New England, 3-1, this afternoon at Nordin Field on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons dip to 7-6 on the season, while the Nor'Easters improve to 6-7.
UNE controlled possession for the majority of the match, while owning a 15-4 shot advantage and a 5-2 margin in penalty corners. Both teams combined to score exactly one goal in each quarter of the contest.
Senior forward Delia Knox (Cumberland, Maine) tallied the goal for Wheaton.
Sophomore forward McKenzie Berry (Nashua, N.H.), junior midfielder Micaela Jacobs (Waterboro, Maine) and sophomore midfielder Gianna Korisianos (Peabody, Mass.) all scored for the Nor'Easters.
The Lyons took a 1-0 edge with 3:34 left in the opening quarter. Knox played the ball back to first year midfielder Kayla Wilonski (Wallingford, Conn.), who fired a shot from the middle the heart of the goalmouth that trickled past the Nor'Easters' keeper and back to Knox' stick to set her up for a quick shot in front of the cage for her sixth marker of the year.
Wheaton carried the lead into the middle of the second quarter, before UNE scored the equalizer with 5:12 showing on the second quarter clock. Junior back Shelly Tremblay (Barre, Mass.) carried the ball down the left side of the field, before sending a centering pass to Berry who slipped a shot inside the right post for her first goal of the year.
The Nor'Easters took the lead for good early in the third quarter with a goal on a penalty corner just 4:48 into the new half for a 2-1 lead margin. Junior defender Makena Valentine (Hatfield, Mass.) sent a shot into the mix in front of the net, where Korisianos changed the direction of the shot before Jacobs got her stick on the ball for her second goal of the season.
Korisianos provided the insurance goal for UNE just 2:14 into the fourth quarter off another penalty corner situation to take a 3-1 cushion. Tremblay carried the ball into the goalmouth, before bouncing a shot toward the cage that was controlled by Korisianos before she knocked the ball into the back of the cage for her second tally of the year with 12:46 left in the game.
The Lyons were held without a shot in the fourth quarter and were not able to cut into the deficit.
Wheaton sophomore keeper Grace Ferguson (Williston, Vt.) made five saves on the day, while senior goalie Dawn DeWeese-Moss (Pittsfield, Maine) stopped one shot for the Nor'Easters.
University of New England returns to action on October 16 when it travels to Medford, Mass. to take on Tufts University at 5:00 p.m., while the Lyons head to Worcester, Mass. on October 19 for a 1:00 p.m. match with New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference foe Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
