NORTON, Mass. -- Junior Anton Lopez (Oakland, Calif.) won an event and finished second in another to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's swimming & diving team to a split in a double-dual meet. The Lyons defeated visiting Babson College 146.50-141.50 and fell to Connecticut College, 208-80, this afternoon at Balfour Natatorium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons are now 4-4 on the season, while the Camels, who also downed Babson, 216-82, improve to a perfect 5-0 and the Beavers fall to 3-5 on the year.
Lopez won the 100-yard freestyle for Wheaton with a time of 47.81 after placing second in the 50-yard freestyle with a mark of 21.24. He also helped the Lyons win the final event of the day, swimming the second leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay, following sophomore Gavin Cullinan (Cummings, Ga.). Senior Ben Goho (Lincoln, R.I.) and sophomore Brian Hixson (Scituate, Mass.) closed out the race with the final two 100-yard segments to combine on a winning time of 3:11.26 for Wheaton.
Goho also collected a first-place result, winning the 50-yard breaststroke with a clip of 26.77, before finishing third overall in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:00.65. Sophomore Andrew Tran (Milton, Mass.) was a workhorse for the Lyons, placing second in the 50-yard backstroke (24.65) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:01.09) to bookend a third-place showing in the 100-yard backstroke after touching the wall at 53.97.Â
Senior Aidan Carberry (Narragansett, R.I.) was the runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke with a mark of 1:00.62 for Wheaton in addition to placing sixth overall in the 50-yard breaststroke. Hixson also picked up a second-place effort with a time of 48.82 in the 100-yard freestyle and was sixth overall and second against Babson in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.36. Cullinan's time of 1:49.77 topped all Babson swimmers in the 200, while his mark of 4:58.60 was also fifth overall and second against the Beavers in the 500-yard freestyle.Â
First year Jadyn Arnold (Oakland, Maine) finished third overall for the Lyons in the 50-yard backstroke after touching the wall at 25.34, while classmate Kevin Rice (Vienna, Va.) placed fourth overall in the 200-yard individual medley and fifth overall in the 1000-yard freestyle with times of 2:02.38 and 10:25.02, respectively.
Wheaton returns to the pool on Wednesday, January 17 when it hosts Worcester Polytechnic Institute at 6:00 p.m. in Balfour Natatorium, while Connecticut College heads to Waterville, Maine to take on Colby College on January 15 at 1:00 p.m. and Babson travels to Waltham, Mass. on January 23 for a 1:00 p.m. dual with Bentley University.
