BRISTOL, R.I. — First year Laila Haraj-Sai and junior Izzy Kruse (Woodstock, Ga.) were both double winners to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team over host Roger Williams University, 5-4, in a dual match this afternoon in Bristol, R.I.
The Lyons improve to 1-0 following their season opener, while the Hawks fall to 3-1.
Kruse defeated junior Gracie McCarthy (Marion, Mass.) in straight sets at number four singles, 6-3, 7-5, to give Wheaton a 5-3 lead to clinch the match. Haraj-Sai won her first collegiate singles contest, 6-3, 6-2, at number three for the Lyons over sophomore Izzy Pecora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.). The Wheaton pair teamed at second doubles to earn an 8-4 triumph over McCarthy and senior Olivia Santoro (Cheshire, Conn.) for the Lyons' only point in doubles play.
Junior Gianna Ferraro (Westerly, R.I.) and graduate student Alessia Cahoon (Dedham, Mass.) combined for an 8-3 win at number one doubles over the Wheaton pair of senior Mareike Mueller (Amesbury, Mass.) and sophomore Kara Greenlee (San Antonio, Texas). Pecora and first year Ella Mancini (Middlebury, Conn.) delivered the other doubles win for the home team with an 8-6 decision over the Lyons' first year duo of Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.) and Asia-Leigh Hollis.
Roger Williams owned a 2-1 edge going into singles play and increased its lead to 3-1 after Ferraro turned in a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Mueller at the number one spot.
The rest of the Lyons' singles line-up went to work, winning four straight matches to secure the win. Wilson won her first singles match at the collegiate level with a 6-4, 6-4 effort at number five over Santoro, before Haraj-Sai followed suit to knot the match at 3-3.
Greenlee fought to a three-set win at second singles to give Wheaton its first lead of the day at 4-3. She dropped the opening set to Cahoon, 6-4, before rebounding to take the next two frames, 6-3 and 10-3 in the super tie-breaker.
The Hawks only other singles win came at number six with Mancini defeating Hollis in three sets, 6-7 (2), 6-4, 10-5.
Wheaton returns to action tomorrow when it hosts Colby-Sawyer College on the Clark Tennis Courts at 12:00 p.m., while Roger Williams hosts Emerson College on September 12 at 3:30 p.m.
