Women's Soccer Edged by Springfield, 1-0

NORTON, Mass. — The Springfield College women's soccer team snapped a scoreless tie with the only goal coming in the 60th minute of play in a 1-0 victory over Wheaton College (Mass.) in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference action this afternoon on Nordin Field in Norton, Mass.

The Lyons slip to 3-6-1 overall and 1-3 in NEWMAC action, while the Pride improve to 5-2-2 and a perfect 3-0.

The first half was devoid of any scoring with sophomore keeper Patricia Bandrup (Poway, Calif.) doing her part for Wheaton, stopping seven shots in the first 45 minutes of play.

Springfield managed to put every shot on frame in the opening half and finished the match with 13 shots, including 11 on net, while the Lyons attempted seven shots on the day. The Pride held a 7-2 margin in corner kicks as well.

Springfield finally broke through 14 and half minutes into the second half when they took advantage of a foul by the Lyons and tallied the only marker of the match. Senior midfielder Maddie Daigneault (Watertown, Conn.) booted a free kick from the right side line just past midfield and far into the box to the feet of sophomore Natalia Mottura (Scarsdale, N.Y.). The midfielder collected the ball and fired a shot into the far right post for her first career goal.

Wheaton had a chance to even the match when sophomore forward Kate Wickenheisser (Oxford, Conn.) took a shot on goal, but had the shot carom off the crossbar in the 83rd minute.

Wickenheisser finished the contest with four shots, including three on net to pace the Lyons' offense.

Bandrup finished with 10 saves for Wheaton, while junior keeper Taryn Ryan (Holyoke, Mass. ) turned away two shots to record her third shutout of the season for the Pride and the sixth of her career.

The Lyons to action on Wednesday, October 4 when they travel to Cambridge, Mass. to play NEWMAC rival No. 23 Massachusetts Institute of Technology for a 4:00 p.m. contest at Henry G. Steinbrenner '27 Stadium, while Springfield hosts conference foe United States Coast Guard Academy on October 4 at 7:00 p.m.
