BRUNSWICK, Maine — First year Jaime Galligo (Madrid, Spain) won his opening round singles match in the Championship bracket at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association New England Regional Championship, before bowing in the second round to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's tennis team today at Pickard Tennis Courts on the campus of host Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine.
Galligo overcame a 7-6 loss in the first set to Colby College first year Sandeep Alapati (Montvale, N.J.), before bouncing back to handily win the match following a 6-1 effort in the middle set and 6-3 in the final frame.
Galligo's run came to an end in the Round of 32 to Bowdoin College senior Reid Staples (Plano, Texas) in a straight set defeat, 6-1, 6-0.
First year Paul Berteaux (Courbevoie, France) also competed in the Championship bracket for the Lyons. The rookie was defeated in the Round of 64 by Tufts University sophomore Javier Gonzalez, who was ranked among the top players in the bracket. Gonzalez won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
Galligo paired with Wheaton classmate Jake Murray (San Diego, Calif.) in the Championship bracket for doubles play, but the duo was taken down by the Tufts sophomore tandem of Aarush Ganji (Harrisburg, N.C.) and Sacha Maes (New York, N.Y.), 8-2.
The Lyons were well represented in the "B" Singles Draw with five players competing in pro-set form.
First year Calvin Van Dyke (Albuquerque, N.M.) battled in the Round of 64 for Wheaton, but his sophomore opponent from Springfield College, Phakin Thongbooncharoen (Bangkok, Thailand) came out on top by a count of 8-5.
Lyon senior Eli Hanlon (Branford, Conn.) and first year Jack Thain (The Woodlands, Texas) were each downed by Trinity College (Conn.) foes in the same round. Hanlon suffered his loss to sophomore John Pope (New York, N.Y.), 8-2, while Thain was dealt an 8-0 fate by first year Andrew Nelson (Cohasset, Mass.).
Murray was on the losing end of an 8-1 outcome at the hands of Bates College senior Crosby Byrnes (New York, N.Y.), while Wheaton junior Daniel Bor (Seattle, Wash.) was ousted by Amherst College senior Micah Elias (Orinda, Calif.), 8-0.
The Lyons conclude their fall season on Wednesday, October 4 when they host nearby Stonehill College at the Clark Tennis Courts for a 4:00 p.m. match before they begin the spring season in March.
