OSWEGO, N.Y. — Sophomore outside hitter Sydney Lyon (Weston, Conn.) spiked for 11 kills on a .474 hitting mark to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-13) win over Marywood University this afternoon in the Oswego State Invitational at Max Ziel Gymnasium in Oswego, N.Y. on the campus of host Oswego State University of New York.
The Lyons improve to a perfect 3-0 on the season, while the Pacers fall to 1-1.
Wheaton dominated at the net with a .316 hitting percentage, while holding Marywood to just 16 kills on a -.013 hitting mark for the match. The Lyons led for almost the entirety of the contest.
Lyon added 12 digs, an ace and a block assist to her effort for Wheaton, while sophomore outside hitter Celina Henn (Atwater, Calif.) put down seven kills, fired three aces, got up for a pair of block assists and scooped up 10 digs. Senior setter Julianna Flack (Saint Petersburg, Fla.) set for 16 assists, served for two aces and got down for a pair of digs and sophomore middle hitter Hollis Hanson (Parker, Colo.) hit a tidy .667 with four kills on six attempts in addition to three block assists.
Haley Hallman led Marywood with four kills, while Gianna Norton picked up 12 digs.
The Lyons held a 5-4 edge early in the opening set, before going on a 10-3 stretch, including a pair of kills from sophomore middle hitter Julia Wingler (Fuquay Varina, N.C.), to take a 15-7 advantage. Wheaton later owned a 16-10 margin, before closing out the frame with nine of the final 12 points, including three kills from Lyon.
The Pacers were within one again at 9-8 in the second set and stayed close at 14-11. Wheaton ripped off six unanswered points, including three aces and a kill from Henn and a kill from first year right side hitter Abbie Dixon (Manassas, Va.) to give the Lyons a 20-11 lead. Wheaton maintained its margin at 23-14, before three straight points from Marywood pulled it to within 23-17. Lyon and Hanson put down the final kills of the set to give the Lyons a 2-0 match lead.
The Pacers took their only leads of the match at 1-0 and 2-1, before Wheaton took control of the third frame with 13 straight points, including three kills from first year right side hitter Mary Caroline Mazzanti (New Orleans, La.), to take a 14-2 advantage. The Lyons maintained their distance and boasted a 24-10 lead, before a three-point burst from Marywood to close to within 24-13. Lyon ended the match with a kill to send Wheaton home with the victory.
The Lyons return to the court on Friday, September 8 when they host University of Massachusetts Dartmouth at 4:00 p.m. as part of a tri-match with Roger Williams University at Emerson Gymnasium.
