PROVIDENCE, R.I. — First year midfielder Ben Kane (Pembroke, Mass.) netted his first collegiate goal to tally the only score for the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's soccer team in a 1-1 draw with host Rhode Island College this afternoon at Alumni Field in Providence, R.I.
The Lyons are now 0-1-3 on the season and record three draws in their first four contests for the first time in school history, while the Anchormen remained unbeaten at 4-0-1.
Wheaton dominated possession throughout the match, holding a definitive 19-6 shot advantage. The visitors also owned an 8-3 margin on corner kicks. Rhode Island College managed just three shots on frame, including a penalty kick.
Kane had just entered the game less than a minute prior to his first career marker for the Lyons. Sophomore midfielder Joey Everett (Danbury, Conn.) played a short ball back within the 18-yard box to classmate Leao Nelson (Bar Harbor, Maine) who threaded a cross to just above the top of the box. Kane was on the receiving end of the cross and lifted a shot from 19 yards out and into the back of the net in the 25th minute of the contest.
Rhode Island College knotted the game in the 78th minute after senior midfielder Joseph Scolaro (Bristol, R.I.) was brought down just inside the top right corner of the box and the home team was awarded a penalty kick.
RIC graduate student forward Jonathan Oliveira (Providence, R.I.) buried the free kick into the lower right corner of the net for his team-leading sixth goal of the season and third via the penalty kick.
Sophomore keeper Michael O'Gara (Ardmore, Pa.) turned away two shots for Wheaton, while junior Jake Reed (Cumberland, R.I.) made five stops for the Anchormen.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday, September 16 when they host Clark University (Mass.) on Keefe Field at 2:00 p.m. in the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference opener, while Rhode Island College heads to Castleton, Vt. to take on Vermont State University Castleton on the same day to begin Little East Conference play at 6:00 p.m.
