Box Score NORTON, Mass. — Junior shortstop Lindsey Oliveira (Westport, Mass.) drove in two runs and junior starting pitcher Sofia Knopf (Norton, Mass.) allowed just one run over seven innings to lead the the Wheaton College (Mass.) softball team over visiting Worcester Polytechnic Institute this afternoon in game one of a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference doubleheader at the Clark Softball Field on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons are now 14-5 overall and 4-1 in league play, while the Engineers are 8-13 and 2-3.
Wheaton scratched out a run in the bottom of the first in game one, before the Engineers knotted the game with a score in the third. The Lyons scored the game's deciding run in the fifth to open the twinbill.
Oliveira was 2-3 with two RBI to pace Wheaton, while sophomore left fielder Juliette Zito (Woodbridge, Conn.) was 1-2 with a walk, two stolen bases and a pair of runs scored. Knopf was outstanding, allowing just one run on four hits and four walks to go with three strikeouts in seven complete innings to improve to 7-2 on the season.
Junior center fielder Sydney Russell (Arlington, Va.) knocked in the only WPI run with a single and junior right fielder Alex Sheehan (Marion, Mass.) was 1-2 with a walk and a run scored. Senior southpaw Sophia Togneri (Hudson, Mass.) was the tough-luck losing pitcher for the Engineers, giving up two runs on six hits and three walks, while fanning three batters in six innings to dip to 4-8.
The Lyons got on the board with a run in the first inning when Zito worked a leadoff walk, stole second base and scored on a single up the middle off the bat of Oliveira to make it 1-0.
WPI got the run back in the third to tie the game in similar fashion to Wheaton. Sheehan opened the frame with a walk, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt before Russell stung a single to center field to plate Sheehan and tie the game at 1-1.
Wheaton experienced deja vu of sorts in the fifth inning with Zito roping a single to center field, stealing second base and coming around to score on a single down the right field line from Oliveira to give the Lyons the eventual game-winning run.
The Engineers put a runner on second base in both the sixth and seventh innings, but Knopf held strong and got out of both frames to earn the victory.
