Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass. — The Babson College softball team scored a run in the seventh and another in the eighth to take a 2-1 victory over visiting Wheaton College (Mass.) this afternoon in game one of a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference doubleheader at Alumni Field in Babson Park, Mass.
The Lyons fall to 12-5 overall and 2-1 in league play, while the Beavers improve to 12-9 and 2-1.
Wheaton took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the sixth and entered the bottom of the seventh having surrendered just five hits to the home team before Babson scored a run to tie it and send the game into extra innings. The Beavers scored with one out to win it.
Sophomore left fielder Juliette Zito (Woodbridge, Conn.) knocked in the Lyons' only run with a single and junior catcher Jill Ceddia (Hopkinton, Mass.) was 3-4. Sophomore right fielder Jillian Rohon (Southington, Conn.) was 2-3 at the plate with a run scored. Junior right-hander Sofia Knopf (Norton, Mass.) was the tough-luck losing pitcher after giving up two runs (both unearned) on seven hits and no walks to go with three strikeouts in seven and two-thirds innings to drop to 6-2 on the year.
Junior first base Chloe Joslin (Wyoming, R.I.) paced Babson with a 3-3 day and a run scored, while sophomore right fielder Sara Moore (Kennett Square, Pa.) was 2-4. First year center fielder Sophia Pak (New Rochelle, N.Y.) had the game's only extra-base hit with a triple. Junior starting pitcher Moira O'Reilly (Columbus, Ohio) picked up the victory after scattering nine hits and allowing just one run to go with 12 strikeouts and four walks in eight complete innings.
Sophomore Athena Hadjipanayis (Rye, N.Y.) was placed on second base for the Beavers to start the eighth inning as part of the international tie-breaker and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt to put the winning run 60 feet away with one out. Senior Lexi Morris (Lexington, Mass.) grounded out to first to bring home Hadjipana with the winning run.
Wheaton threatened throughout the game with a runner on third in three different innings, including the second frame when Ceddia, sophomore center fielder Grace DiBacco (Selkirk, N.Y.) and Rohon registered three straight singles to load the bases with no outs, but O'Reilly set down the next three batters on strikes to escape unscathed.
The Lyons finally broke through to snap the scoreless tie with a run in the sixth. Rohon drew a leadoff walk and junior third base Amanda Bogardus (Saco, Maine) followed suit with a two-out walk to push Rohon to second before Zito slapped a single to right field to give Wheaton a 1-0 lead.
Babson looked to get the run back in the bottom of the frame when Pak smacked a triple to left field with one out, but Knopf retired the next two batters to strand Pak on third.
The Beavers finally got on the board in the seventh with some help from the Lyons. Joslin singled to left field, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and later took third base on an errant pick-off attempt at second base. Moore came through with a two-out single up the middle to bring home Joslin with the tying run.
