Box Score NORTON, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) softball team fell to United States Coast Guard Academy, 6-3, in the second game of a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference twinbill today at the Clark Softball Field on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons fall to 22-14 overall and 8-8 in league play, while the Bears win their sixth straight game to improve to 28-8 and 12-4.
Coast Guard rapped out 16 hits in game two. The Bears cracked the scoring column with a pair of runs in the top of the third before adding three more runs in the fifth to take a 5-0 advantage. Wheaton got the runs back in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to 5-3. Coast Guard tacked on an insurance run in the sixth for the day's final run.
Sophomore right fielder Juliette Zito (Woodbridge, Conn.) led the Lyons, going 3-4 with a double and knocked in two runs to go with a run scored and a stolen base, while senior second base Bryanna Agan (Averill Park, N.Y.) was 1-3 with an RBI. First year catcher Riley Dolan (Coram, N.Y.) reached base twice with a single and a walk. First year starting pitcher Amber Arcand (Millville, Mass.) suffered the loss, yielding six runs (three earned) on 16 hits and a walk to go with six strikeouts and dropped to 8-6.
Junior center fielder Christine Carey (San Diego, Calif.) fueled the visitors, going 2-5 with a double and three runs batted in, while starting pitcher Isabelle Shroyer (Marysville, Ohio) was 3-4 with two RBI. Senior second base Selena Serna (San Diego, Calif.) hit a solo homer and was 3-4 with two runs scored and third base Julia Breidenthal (Leawood, Kan.) belted a pair of doubles and scored a run. Shroyer picked up the win in the circle for the Bears, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks in seven complete innings, while setting down three batters on strikes to improve to 14-4.
Coast Guard scored a pair of two-out runs in the third to take a 2-0 margin. Breidenthal ripped a double to left to open the frame, before Serna singled to put runners on the corners. Arcand looked primed to escape the inning unscathed for Wheaton after fanning the next two batters, but Shroyer came through with a two-run single up the middle.
The Bears scored three more two-out runs in the fifth to increase their lead to 5-0. Shroyer singled, first base Katie Becker (Jacksonville, N.C.) reached on an error and left fielder Natalie Beck (Billings, Mont.) drew a two-out walk, before Carey cleared the bases with a double to left center to score three unearned runs and give Coast Guard a five-run lead.
The Lyons registered their first multi-run inning of the day with three markers in the fifth to close to within 5-3. Dolan worked a leadoff walk and junior left fielder Allison Weston (West Islip, N.Y.) singled to left to set up Zito, who delivered a two-run double to left center. Agan followed with a single to left to plate Zito and make it 5-3.
Serna capped the scoring with her second home run of the year to open the sixth inning and give the Bears a 6-3 lead and eventual win.
Wheaton returns to action tomorrow when it travels to Springfield, Mass. to take on Springfield College for a NEWMAC doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m., while Coast Guard hosts Massachusetts Institute of Technology in conference play at 12:00 p.m.
