Box Score NORTON, Mass. -- Junior Jill Ceddia (Hopkinton, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly to plate the winning run to give the Wheaton College (Mass.) softball team its second walk-off win of the day with an 8-7 victory to complete a doubleheader sweep over visiting Emmanuel College (Mass.) this evening at the Clark Softball Field on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons improve to 22-12 on the season, while the Saints fall to 18-16.
Wheaton opened the season with an 8-5 walk-off win over Emmanuel on March 11 in Kissimmee, Fla. to give it three walk-off wins on the season over the Saints.
Junior shortstop Olivia Conti (Cranston, R.I.) was 3-4 with a pair of home runs and three RBI in the second game after going hitless in the opener for Emmanuel. Her second homer was the 22nd of her career to tie Ashley Skey for the program record. Sophomore center fielder Taylor Chelak (Westborough, Mass.) also belted a homer and drove in two runs in the second game, while senior right fielder Julyanne Pacheco (Somerset, Mass.) knocked in two runs and was 2-3 with a walk. First year starting pitcher Madison Hinkley (Somers, Conn.) joined Conti, Pacheco and Chelak with multiple hits in the game for the Saints, including a double. Dawe was saddled with the loss after giving up three runs (one earned) on four hits and five walks to go with two strikeouts in three and two-thirds innings of relief work.
Junior shortstop Lindsey Oliveira (Westport, Mass.) was 1-2 with a long ball, two walks, three RBI and a run scored for the Lyons, while junior left fielder Allison Weston (West Islip, N.Y.) was 2-4 with a double, two runs batted in and a pair of runs scored. Ceddia was 1-2 with an RBI and junior third base Bryanna Agan (Averill Park, N.Y.) was 2-3 with a double and two runs scored. First year relief pitcher Brittany Dost (Centereach, N.Y.) picked up the win to improve to 4-0 with three innings of one-hit, one-run relief in addition to a walk.
Emmanuel came out swinging in game two with four runs in the first two innings to take a 4-0 margin. Wheaton pulled even with four runs in the third to make it 4-4. The Saints scored twice in the top of the fourth to take a 6-4 lead, before the Lyons answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 7-6 edge. Emmanuel tied it in the sixth, but Wheaton scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
The Lyons loaded the bases with one out for the second straight inning in the seventh of the nightcap after first year first base Lily Platt (Hallowell, Maine) stroked a single to center and Dost and first year catcher Riley Dolan (Coram, N.Y.) were each issued free passes. Ceddia hit a fly ball to right field and Platt tagged up and scored from third on the play to give Wheaton the second win in their last at-bat for the day.
Emmanuel wasted no time getting on the board in game two when Conti homered over the center field fence to open the contest. The Saints added three more runs in the second to take a 4-0 advantage. Hinkley ripped a leadoff double down the left field line and later scored on a single to center from Conti. One batter later, Chelak hit her first round-tripper of the season to plate Conti and give Emmanuel a four-run lead.
The Lyons put together three extra-base hits to score four runs in the third to pull even at 4-4. First year Amber Arcand (Millville, Mass.) worked a walk and stole second before Weston cracked a double to left center to bring home Arcand with Wheaton's first run of the game. Agan followed with a double and Oliveira delivered again with a three-run homer over the left field fence to knot the game at four runs apiece.
The Saints tacked on two runs in the fourth to take a 6-4 lead. Hinkley singled to left and senior Lylah Niederberger (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) was hit by a pitch before both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Pacheco singled to center field to bring home both runners.
The Lyons took their first lead of the game with three runs in the bottom of the inning and took advantage of an Emmanuel miscue. First year Ashlyn Burt (Olathe, Kan.) served a double to left center and advanced to third on a passed ball, before Weston singled her home. Agan and Oliveira both drew walks to load the bases with two outs for Wheaton. Sophomore center fielder Grace DiBacco (Selkirk, N.Y.) reached on an infield error and two runs scored ahead of her to give Wheaton a 7-6 edge.
Emmanuel scored its final run of the day in the top of the sixth to knot the game at 7-7. Conti crushed a pitch well over the left field fence with two outs to give the Saints the equalizer before the Lyons won the game in the seventh.
Wheaton looked to score the go-ahead run in the sixth after it loaded the bases, but a foul pop up near the home plate area was caught by the Emmanuel first base and a Lyon runner on third attempted to score, but was tagged out at the plate to end the inning.
Wheaton returns to play on Friday, April 28 when it hosts United States Coast Guard Academy for a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference twinbill at 3:00 p.m., while the Saints host Dean College for a doubleheader on April 27 at 5:00 p.m.
