Box Score BOSTON, Mass. — Junior shortstop Lindsey Oliveira (Westport, Mass.) homered and doubled to knock in four runs and lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) softball team to a 9-0 win over host Emerson College in the second game of a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference doubleheader this afternoon on Rotch Field in Boston, Mass.
The Lyons improve to 20-12 overall and 8-6 in league play, while the Lions fall to 15-17 and 3-11.
Wheaton got on the board with a run in the top of the first and scored the rest of its runs in the final three innings of the game with two runs in the fifth, four in the sixth and two more in the seventh.
Junior second base Bryanna Agan (Averill Park, N.Y.) joined Oliveira as a key to the Lyon offense with a 2-5 effort that included a double and two runs batted in to go with a run scored. Eight different players registered a hit for Wheaton, including first year starting pitcher Amber Arcand (Millville, Mass.), who was 3-4 with a double, a run batted in and two runs scored. In the circle, Arcand was outstanding, hurling seven innings of shutout ball, yielding just two hits and four walks to go with seven strikeouts to improve to 8-5 on the season.
Junior second base Claire Overton (Wayne, Pa.) doubled and walked to pace Emerson, while sophomore right fielder Carly Rosenberger (Conshohocken, Pa.) collected a single in three at-bats. Sophomore pitcher Jessica Gomez (West Chester, Pa.) was saddled with the loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits and two walks in addition to striking out a pair of batters in five and a third innings of work.
The Lyons got on the board in the top of the first when Oliveira hit a ball over the left field fence for her second home run of the season. The run held up until the fifth when Wheaton scored twice to take a 3-0 lead.
Arcand opened the fifth with a double to right and Agan reached on an error before Oliveira came through again with a two-run double to the left center gap to give the Lyons a 3-0 margin.
Wheaton strung together four straight hits to open the sixth and scored four times to take a 7-0 advantage. Platt singled to lead off the inning, before first year Ashlyn Burt (Olathe, Kan.) struck a double to left center to plate Platt with the fourth run of the game. Junior left fielder Allison Weston (West Islip, N.Y.) and Arcand smacked back-to-back singles before Agan delivered a two-run double to center field to increase the Lyons count to 6-0. Oliveira followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to give Wheaton a seven-run lead.
The Lyons capped the scoring with two runs in the seventh for a 9-0 lead. Arcand and sophomore right fielder Juliette Zito (Woodbridge, Conn.) each supplied run-scoring singles to give Wheaton insurance runs.
The Lyons will return to play on Tuesday, April 25 when they host Emmanuel College (Mass.) for a 3:30 p.m. twinbill at the Clark Softball Field, while the Lions travel to Wellesley, Mass. on April 28 to take on NEWMAC foe Wellesley College at 3:00 p.m.
