Weston Leads Softball to Sweep over Clark with 7-4 Win

NORTON, Mass. -- Junior left fielder Allison Weston (West Islip, N.Y.) knocked in three runs to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) softball team to a 7-4 win over visiting Clark University to complete a doubleheader sweep this afternoon in the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference opener at the Clark Softball Field on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass. 

The Lyons won their fourth straight game to improve to 12-4 overall and 2-0 in league play, while the Cougars fall to 3-14 and 0-2.

The teams combined for 16 errors in two games, including seven in the second game. 

 

The Lyons established their momentum right from the start in game two, scoring four runs to open the first inning. Clark chipped away with a run in the second and three in the third to knot the second game at 4-4. Wheaton held its guests without a run for the remainder of the afternoon, while scoring single runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings to take home a 7-4 win.

Weston led the Lyons, going 2-3 with a double, a stolen base and three runs batted in, while junior second base Bryanna Agan (Averill Park, N.Y.) reached base three times with a double and two walks to go with an RBI and a run scored. Junior catcher Jill Ceddia (Hopkinton, Mass.) singled and knocked in a run. First year relief pitcher Brittany Dost (Centereach, N.Y.) picked up the win to improve to 2-0 with four innings of three-hit, shutout relief that saw her issue one free pass.

First year left fielder Madison Dillon (Rocky Hill, Conn.) paced the Cougars with a 2-3 effort highlighted by a double to drive in two runs and graduate student first base Kaylee Gibson (Northfield, Mass.) was 2-3 with a double, a run scored, a walk and an RBI. First year starting pitcher Brooke Buzzeo (Trumbull, Conn.) fell to 3-5, giving up seven runs (one earned) on seven hits, two walks and two strikeouts in six innings of work.

Sophomore Juliette Zito (Woodbridge, Conn.) doubled to left center to lead off the four-run first inning for Wheaton. She later came around to score on an error. The Lyons took advantage of another miscue to score a run and Weston brought two more runs across with a two-run double to right center to give the home team a 4-0 lead.

First year catcher Magdalena Barthel (East Haven, Conn.) reached on an error to open the top of the second for Clark and later scored on a Dillon double with two outs to cut the margin to 4-1.

The Cougars rallied for three runs in the third inning to pull even at 4-4. Junior shortstop Samantha Crowley (Middleboro, Mass.) and senior center fielder Eliza Lindberg (East Chatham, N.Y.) stroked back-to-back singles to open the frame, before Gibson doubled to left to score Crowley. Graduated student third base Jessica Martin (Winthrop, Mass.) and Dillon later came through with run-scoring singles to knot the score for Clark. The offensive output was the last for the Cougars as Wheaton scored three times over the next three innings to secure the win.

Sophomore center fielder Grace DiBacco (Selkirk, N.Y.) doubled and scored on a two-out Weston single to give the Lyons the lead for good in the bottom of the third. Wheaton did more two-out damage in the fourth when Agan drew a walk and later came around to score ahead of a Ceddia single to center to give the Lyons a 6-4 lead.

Wheaton tacked on an insurance run in the sixth when Zito reached on another error and Agan delivered a double to right to give the Lyons the final run of the day.

Wheaton returns to action on Friday, April 7 when it heads to Babson Park, Mass. to play NEWMAC foe Babson College in a 3:00 p.m. twinbill, while Clark hosts Fitchburg State University on April 4 at 3:00 p.m.
