Box Score NORTON, Mass. — Junior Jill Ceddia (Hopkinton, Mass.) delivered a walk-off RBI single in the eighth inning to give the Wheaton College (Mass.) softball team a 4-3 victory and complete a doubleheader sweep over visiting Wellesley College this evening in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at the Clark Softball Field on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons improve to 16-8 overall and 6-2 in NEWMAC play, while the Blue fall to 2-17-1 and 0-6. Wheaton is off to its best start in conference play since going 7-1 to start the NEWMAC circuit in 2017.
The Lyons broke into the scoring column first with a run in the second inning, before Wellesley responded with a matching run in the fourth to knot the game at 1-1. Wheaton scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-1 margin, but the Blue answered with two runs of their own in the top of the sixth to re-tie the contest at 3-3 before going into extra innings.
Ceddia's only hit was the game-winner for the Lyons. First year first base Lily Platt (Hallowell, Maine) was 2-3 with two runs batted in as one of seven Wheaton players with at least one hit in the game. Sophomore center fielder Grace DiBacco (Selkirk, N.Y.) also contributed with two runs scored and was 1-3. First year right-handed hurler Amanda Arcand (Millville, Mass.) went the distance of complete eight innings to earn the win after allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks to go with a pair of strikeouts to improve her record to 7-3.
First year first base Emeline Gaunce (Los Altos, Calif.) led all players with three hits for Wellesley, including a double, in four at-bats and also scored a pair of runs, while junior catcher Julz Vargas (Los Angeles, Calif.) knocked in two runs with a double in three at-bats. Senior starting pitcher Marisa Sgambati (Scottsdale, Ariz.) was saddled with the loss, giving up four runs (two earned) on eight hits to go with a pair of strikeouts in seven and a third innings of work.
Junior third base Amanda Bogardus (Saco, Maine) was placed on second base, as per international tie-breaker rules in extra innings for the Lyons, before advancing to third following a single through the left side from junior second base Bryanna Agan (Averill Park, N.Y.). Junior shortstop Lindsey Oliveira (Westport, Mass.) beat out an infield single that ricocheted off the third base's glove and into the shortstop's mitt to keep Bogardus from scoring the winning run. Ceddia stepped into the box and ripped a single to center field to plate Bogardus and give the home team the win.
Wheaton strung together three straight two-out singles to score the first run of the game for a 1-0 edge in the bottom of the second. DiBacco began the two-out rally with a single up the middle, before junior left fielder Allison Weston (West Islip, N.Y.) dumped a single into right field to put runners on the corners. Platt laced a single down the right field line to plate DiBacco with the first Lyon run.
The Blue responded with a run in the fourth with three straight hits of their own, including a pair of doubles. Gaunce roped a double to center and sophomore second base Peytin Penny (Louisville, Ky.) punched a single into center field to put runners on first and third. Vargas came through with a double to left to plate Gaunce and pull the visitors even at 1-1.
Wheaton took advantage of a pair of miscues by Wellesley and answered in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs to take a 3-1 margin. Rohon smacked a one-out single to right field and DiBacco reached on an infield error to put two runners on base for the Lyons. Weston flew out to center field, but Rohon attempted to advance to third on tag and the throw got away from the Blue third base to enable Rohon to score the go-ahead run. Platt came through again with a single to center to bring home DiBacco and give Wheaton a 3-1 lead.
Wellesley also capitalized on its opponent's error and tacked on two runs in the sixth to tie the game at 3-3. The Blue loaded the bases with one out when Young drew a walk, Gaunce singled to center field and Penny was issued a free pass. Vargas reached on an infield error and two runs came across for Wellesley to knot the contest at 3-3.
The Lyons return to the diamond tomorrow when they travel to Northampton, Mass. to take on NEWMAC foe Smith College for a 12:00 p.m. twinbill, while the Blue head to Worcester, Mass. to play league opponent Clark University tomorrow at the same time.
