Oliveira, Ceddia Lead Softball to Sweep over Bridgewater State with 7-3 Game Two Win

Box Score

NORTON, Mass. – Junior shortstop Lindsey Oliveira (Westport, Mass.) collected three hits and senior catcher Jill Ceddia (Hopkinton, Mass.) had two hits and knocked in a run to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) softball team to a sweep over visiting Bridgewater State University, winning game two of a double header, 7-3, this evening at the Clark Softball Field on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.

The Lyons have won three of their last four and improve to 10-4 on the season, while the Bears fall to 2-14.

The Bears cracked the scoring column with a run in the top of the first of game two and added two more runs in the third to take a 3-1 lead, before Wheaton rallied for four runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead for good at 5-3. Eight different players collected at least one hit for the Lyons in the game.

Oliveira was 3-4 and Ceddia was 2-4 with two runs scored. Sophomore center fielder Juliette Zito (Woodbridge, Conn.) was 2-4, while first years Riley Dolan (Coram, N.Y.) and Amber Arcand (Millville, Mass.) each singled and knocked in a run apiece. Arcand earned the win with four innings of one-hit shutout relief to bump her record to 5-1 and also fanned three batters to go with a walk.

Sophomore Emily Marcotte (North Dighton, Mass.), junior Madison Flamme (Bethel, Conn.) and senior Madison Dana (Lynn, Mass.) each collected a pair of hits to lead the Bridgewater State offense. Junior righty Madelyn Klingel (Windsor, Conn.) suffered the loss to drop to 1-7 after allowing six runs (three earned) on 10 hits in five innings of work.

The Bears loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first following back-to-back singles from Marcotte and Flamme, before junior Janet Jolly (Raynham, Mass.) worked a walk. Dana grounded into a double play to plate Marcotte with the visitors' first run of the game.

The Lyons answered in the bottom of the second when junior left fielder Allison Weston (West Islip, N.Y.) blasted a triple to right center and later scored on a throwing error to knot the game at 1-1.

Marcotte and Flamme were in the middle of another scoring inning for Bridgewater State, reaching with consecutive singles again to put runners on the corners with no outs in the top of the third. Flamme stole second base and Marcotte scored on the play when the throw wasn't handled by the Wheaton second base. Flamme went to third on a wild pitch and Jolly grounded to the pitcher, but the throw was too late to the plate as Flamme scored to give the Bears a 3-1 lead.

The Lyons rallied for four runs with two outs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-3 advantage. Ceddia and first year Ashlyn Burt (Olathe, Kan.) both singled and stood on third and first base, respectively, before Dolan reached on an infield single to third to bring home Ceddia. Arcand laced a single up the middle to bring around Burt to score the game's tying run and pull the home team even at 3-3. Sophomore right fielder Emme Conley (Riverside, R.I.) reached on a throwing error that allowed both Dolan and Arcand to score the fourth and fifth runs for Wheaton.

The Lyons tacked on another run in the fourth with the benefit of an error and added one more score in the sixth after Agan drew a walk and later scored on a single to left center from Ceddia to give Wheaton a 7-3 lead.

The Lyons return to action on Saturday, April 1 when they host Clark University (Mass.) in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at 12:00 p.m., while Bridgewater State travels to Newport, R.I. on March 30 for a 4:00 p.m. twinbill with Salve Regina University.
