Softball Blanked by UMass Dartmouth, 3-0, in Game Two of Twinbill

Box Score

NORTON, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) softball team was shut out, 3-0, by University of Massachusetts Dartmouth to salvage a split in the second game of a doubleheader at the Clark Softball Field on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.

The Lyons fall to 8-4 on the season, while the Corsairs have won four of their last five to improve to 11-5.

The teams combined for seven hits in the second game, which ended in a tidy hour and 28 minutes. UMD scored a pair of runs in the top of the second, before tacking on an insurance run in the fifth.

Junior second base Bryanna Agan (Averill Park, N.Y.) was 1-2 with a walk and a double for Wheaton, while junior shortstop Lindsey Oliveira (Westport, Mass.) was 1-3 with a stolen base. First year right-handed starting pitcher Amber Arcand (Millville, Mass.) suffered her first loss of the season to fall to 4-1 after giving up three runs on four hits and a walk, while setting down four batters on strikes in six innings.

Junior right-handed starting pitcher Kaitlyn Shirshac (Enfield, Conn.) allowed just two hits and one walk, while striking out five batters in seven complete innings to improve to a perfect 6-0 for UMass Dartmouth. She allowed just one runner to advance past second base for the day and retired 16 straight batters during one stretch. Graduate student designated player Lindsay Chubbuck (Berkley, Mass.) clubbed a two-run homer to give the Corsairs all the runs they would need, while graduate student shortstop Leah Major (Fairhaven, Mass.) was 1-2 with a run batted in. Sophomore second base Larissa Piessens (Windham, N.H.) collected a double for UMass Dartmouth as well.

Piessens cracked a double to left center, before Chubbuck's blast over the left field fence gave the Corsairs a 2-0 margin. Major knocked in the visitors' third run with a run-scoring single in the fifth to make it 3-0.

Agan doubled to center field and Oliveira followed with an infield single to third base to put runners on the corners with just one out in the bottom of the first for the Lyons. Shirshac set down the next two batters to end the inning and did not allow another Wheaton batter to reach base until Agan worked a two-out walk in the sixth.

The Lyons return to the diamond on Tuesday, March 28 when they host Bridgewater State University for a twinbill at the Clark Softball Field at 3:00 p.m., while UMass Dartmouth hosts Babson College on the same day at the same time for a doubleheader.
