Box Score KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- First year pitcher Amber Arcand (Millville, Mass.) allowed just one run in a complete game and junior Allison Weston (West Islip, N.Y.) drove in a pair of runs to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) softball team to a 4-1 victory over Arcadia University this morning at the Fortune Road Sportsplex in Kissimmee, Fla. as part of The Spring Games.
The Lyons improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Knights fall to 2-3.
Wheaton scored single runs in the first, fourth, fifth and six innings to contribute to its winning margin.
Arcand allowed just six hits and a walk to go with six strikeouts in seven innings to earn her first collegiate victory for the Lyons and helped herself at the plate, going 2-4 with a double and a run scored. Weston was 1-3 with a stolen base and first year designated player Ashlyn Burt (Olathe, Kan.) was 2-3 with a double and a pair of runs scored. Junior catcher Jill Ceddia (Hopkinton, Mass.) was 1-3 with a double and an RBI.
Junior second base Allison LaRochelle (Somerset, N.J.) provided the only production for the Arcadia offense with a pinch-hit solo home run. The Knights put runners in scoring position in four different innings, including two frames with a runner on third base, but were unable to capitalize. Junior starting pitcher Juliana Presto (Easton, Pa.) suffered the loss and falls to 2-2 on the season after allowing four runs on eight hits and four free passes to go with nine strikeouts.
Wheaton got on the board first when junior second base Bryanna Agan (Averill Park, N.Y.) drew a one-out walk and came around to score ahead of a Ceddia double to left center with two outs for a 1-0 lead.
The Lyons manufactured a run in the fourth to double their lead at 2-0. Burt stroked a leadoff single to left field, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, scampered to third on a wild pitch and raced home on a Weston sacrifice fly.
Wheaton added another two-out run in the fifth when Arcand doubled to center and later scored on a pinch-hit RBI single off the bat of sophomore Emme Conley (Riverside, R.I.) to take a 3-0 lead.
The Knights scored their only run of the game when LaRochelle, who had entered as a defensive replacement in the fourth, launched a solo blast for her first collegiate home run to open the sixth inning and cut the deficit to 3-1.
The Lyons added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame when Burt cracked a double to left field and scored ahead of a Weston base hit to right field for a 4-1 advantage.
Wheaton is right back at it with a game against North Park University today at 11:30 a.m., while Arcadia takes on University of New England at the same time.
