Knox Gives Field Hockey a 1-0 Victory at Clark (Mass.)

WORCESTER, Mass. — Junior forward Delia Knox's (Cumberland Center, Maine) first quarter goal was all the Wheaton College (Mass.) field hockey team needed in a 1-0 victory over host Clark University (Mass.) this afternoon in a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference match at Granger Field in Worcester, Mass.

The Lyons improve to 4-8 overall and 1-4 in conference play, while the Cougars fall to 4-7 and 1-4.

Clark owned an 11-7 shooting margin, but Wheaton made the most of its four shots on frame. The home team held a 4-3 edge in penalty corners as well.

Knox tallied her third marker of the year on a feed from classmate Macey Poitras-Cote (Northborough, Mass.) to give the Lyons a 1-0 lead with just 4:22 left in the opening period.

Senior goalie Emma Lapreziosa (Bowdoinham, Maine) did the rest to keep Wheaton in front with seven saves to record her second shutout of the season and fifth of her career.

The Cougars looked for the equalizer in the fourth quarter when senior defender Rachael Romain (Seekonk, Mass.) fired a shot during a penalty corner situation, but her attempt hit the post to keep Clark off the board. The Cougars had one final chance to knot the game in the final minute of play off a penalty corner, but sophomore defender Elizabeth Cacciapaglia's (Ridgefield, Conn.) bid was stopped in the air by Lapreziosa to secure the blank sheet for the Lyons.

First year forward Ally Slicer (Waterford, Maine) paced the Wheaton offense with three shots.

Sophomore goalie Loren Root (Sherborn, Mass.) finished with three saves for Clark.

The Lyons return to action tomorrow when they travel to Biddeford, Maine to take on University of New England for a 1:00 p.m. match, while the Cougars host Nichols College on October 10 at 7:00 p.m.
