Field Hockey Nipped at University of New England, 2-1

BIDDEFORD, Maine — The Wheaton College (Mass.) field hockey team was edged by host University of New England, 2-1, this afternoon on Blue Bolt Field in Biddeford, Maine.

The Lyons dip to 4-9 on the season, while the Nor'Easters improve to 5-8.

Despite firing just five shots in the match, Wheaton tallied the first goal of the afternoon and led for more than 37 minutes, before University of New England scored on a penalty corner with no time remaining in the third quarter and then again just over four minutes into the fourth period.

Junior forward Lydia Gaudreau (Gorham, Maine) unleashed a shot that was blocked by the UNE defense, but senior midfielder Mackenzie Yates (Brownsville, Vt.) was there for the rebound that resulted in her second marker of the season. The Lyons' score came with 7:28 left in the quarter to give them a 1-0 lead.

Wheaton's defense held strong for 45 minutes without a goal, despite 18 shots taken by the Nor'Easters.

UNE finally broke through when sophomore defender Shelly Tremblay (Barre, Mass.) scored the equalizer with no time on the clock in the third quarter. The Nor'Easters had been awarded a penalty corner with fractions of a second left in the frame. Junior midfielder Lily Clough (Wells, Maine), who received the insert just right of center, passed it back left to Tremblay for a shot that squirted to the right of the Lyon keeper and just inside the post to knot the game at 1-1.

University of New England tallied the eventual game-winner on another penalty corner just 4:08 into the final quarter of play. Tremblay fired a shot from just inside the top of the arc, headed toward the right side of the cage, before being tipped by first year forward Kate Kelso (Skowhegan, Maine) off the post. Junior forward Madi Robito (Pelham, N.H.) pounced on the rebound in the crease to finish into the left corner to give the Nor'Easters a 2-1 margin.

Wheaton was unable to manage a shot in the final three quarters of play for a chance to re-tie the match.

Senior goalie Emma Lapreziosa (Bowdoinham, Maine) registered 11 saves for the Lyons, while junior keeper Dawn DeWeese-Moss (Pittsfield, Mass.) turned away a pair of shots for UNE.

Wheaton returns to play on Thursday, October 12 when it hosts Wesleyan University on Nordin Field at 7:00 p.m., while the Nor'Easters host No. 5 Tufts University on October 11 at 6:00 p.m.
