NORTON, Mass. — Senior midfielder Robert Lloyd (Lexington, Mass.) scored his second goal of the season for the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's soccer team in a 1-1 draw with No. 16 Bowdoin College this evening at Nordin Field on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons are now 2-2-5 on the season, while the Polar Bears, who are ranked in the most recent United Soccer Coaches poll, remain unbeaten at 6-0-3.
Bowdoin owned advantages in shots (22-13) and corner kicks (8-3).
Wheaton got on the board first on a set piece, scoring on a corner kick in the 28th minute to take a 1-0 edge. Sophomore midfielder Joey Everett (Danbury, Conn.) lifted a corner kick from the left sideline to five yards in front of the goalmouth, where Lloyd was there with a flying header that ended up in the right corner of the back of the net for his second goal of the season. The goal snapped a string of 223:40 of scoreless soccer for the Polar Bear defense.
Wheaton started the scoring in the 27th minute of play when sophomore midfielder Joey Everett (Danbury, Conn.) The Lyons held the lead for the next 33-plus minutes until Bowdoin responded with the final goal of the night. First year defender Keito Ishibashi (Bethesda, Md.) carried the ball down the right sideline, before sending a hard centering cross to sophomore midfielder Mateo Pacelli (San Diego, Calif.), who fired the equalizer into a small window between the Wheaton keeper and the left post for his third goal of the season. The score came in the 61st minute to knot the contest at 1-1.
Sophomore keeper Michael O'Gara (Ardmore, Pa.) turned away eight shots for the Lyons, while Alex Ainsworth (Winnetka, Ill.) recorded four saves for the Polar Bears.
Wheaton returns to action on Wednesday, October 4 when it travels to Salem, Mass. to play Salem State University for a 7:00 p.m. contest on Alumni Field, while Bowdoin hosts Trinity College (Conn.) on October 7 at 11:00 a.m.
