Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. -- Senior midfielder Ewan Noble (Newport, R.I.) netted the only goal of the game for the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's soccer team and it held up in a 1-1 draw at host Worcester Polytechnic Institute this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at H Carr Field in Worcester, Mass.
The Lyons are now 4-3-2 overall and 0-1-1 in league play, while the Engineers stand at 3-1-4 and 0-0-2.
WPI held a 17-10 shot advantage but was held scoreless until the 76th minute of play.
Wheaton carried much of the possession in the opening half but it was WPI with the best scoring chances in the opening 30 minutes. Aaron Vaz (Medford, MA) had his bid in front snuffed by Lyon netminder Cam Millington (Fairfield, CT) midway through the first half and Francesco Valagussa (Arlington, MA) saw his boot repelled by the senior goalkeeper at 29:43. The guests dented the scoreboard about 10 minutes later when sophomore forward Mo Faye (Kaolack, Senegal) was taken down in the box and senior midfielder Ewan Noble (Newport, RI) stepped up and drilled the ensuing penalty kick into the bottom left of the goal with 5:36 to go before intermission.
The second half was wildly entertaining as the Engineers knotted the game in the 76th minute when sophomore forward Filippo Marcantoni (Ponti sul Mincio, Italy) headed a loose ball in the middle of the field to space on the left side where senior midfielder Luke Savoie (Mansfield, Mass.) pounced on it drove toward goal and blasted a laser into the low right corner for his second marker of the season at 75:17.
Both teams had chances to go ahead in the final 10 minutes but Wheaton sophomore forward Alasdair Ferrier (Concord, NH) had a pair of shots stopped by Crimson and Gray goalkeeper Roe Hendrick (Nashua, NH) in the 85th minute and WPI's Matthew Biando (Duluth, GA) hit the crossbar 30 seconds later before Vaz's subsequent rebound sailed high.
Millington registered a career-high seven saves for Wheaton, while Hendrick stopped four shots for the Engineers.
The Lyons return to play on Tuesday, September 27 when they travel to New London, Conn. to take on Connecticut College at 4:00 p.m., while WPI heads to Boston, Mass. on the same day to take on Wentworth Institute of Technology at 7:00 p.m.
