Men's Soccer Edged by Brandeis, 2-1

Box Score

NORTON, Mass. – All three goals in the game were scored in a span of 6:03, but the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's soccer team came up short, 2-1, to visiting Brandeis University this afternoon at Keefe Field on the campus of Wheaton College in Norton, Mass.

The Lyons fall to 4-3-1, while the Judges improve to 3-2-1 on the season and take a 16-15-3 lead in the all-time series.

Wheaton outshot its guests by a margin of 18-11, but was only able to manage one score in the contest, despite putting nine shots on net.

Both of Brandeis' scores came within the first 16 minutes of play and in a span of 132 seconds to spell the difference.

The Judges first tally of the contest came on a set piece and some luck at 13:34 of the opening half. First year midfielder Rainer Osselmann-Chai (Acton, Mass.) served a corner kick into the box, where senior defender Forrest Shimazu (Natick, Mass.) connected with a header that ricocheted off the far right post untouched and collected by Max Horowitz (Swansea, Mass.), who fired a shot from the right corner of the goal-mouth and into the back of the net. The assist for Shimazu was his first collegiate point.

First year midfielder Nico Beninda (Monroe Township, N.J.) gave Brandeis a two-score lead with his second tally of the season on a low ground shot from the top of the box that snuck just inside the far right post just 2:12 later at the 15:46 mark of the half.

The Lyons answered less than four minutes later to cut the deficit to 2-1 for the game's third goal in a span of 6:03 to log the only three markers of the match for both teams. Sophomore defender Ethan Alfano (East Greenwich, R.I.) lifted a long serve from outside of the 18-yard box to in front of the goal-mouth, where junior midfielder Gavin Mahoney (Carlsbad, Calif.) redirected the ball with a header into the back of the net in the 20th minute of play for his second tally of the season.

Mahoney looked for a two-score bid in the 51st minute for Wheaton when he had the Judges' senior keeper Aiden Guthro (Newburyport, Mass.) one-on-one on the left post, but Guthro met Mahoney's shot out of the net to keep it a one-goal game.

Guthro finished the day with eight saves for Brandeis, while first year goalie Michael O'Gara (Ardmore, Pa.) stopped two shots for the Lyons.

The Judges return to action on Saturday, September 24 when they host Eastern Nazarene College at 1:00 p.m., while Wheaton travels to Worcester, Mass. to play New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference rival Worcester Polytechnic Institute on the same day at 12:00 p.m.
