NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's volleyball team was defeated by host Smith College, 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-10), this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at Ainsworth Gymnasium in Northampton, Mass. 

The Lyons fall to 4-4 overall and 0-2 in league play, while the Pioneers improve to 8-2 and 2-0.

Smith put together a formidable .308 hitting percentage, while holding Wheaton to -.011 for the day.

First year middle hitter Hollis Hanson (Parker, Colo.) put down five kills and fired an ace for the Lyons, while classmate Sydney Lyon (Weston, Conn.) swung for five kills and picked up three digs. Senior setter Hannah George (Duxbury, Mass.) set for 11 assists, registered a kill and got down for three digs and senior libero Sophie Wilhelm (Saunderstown, R.I.) served up three aces in addition to picking up six digs.

Right side hitter Abby Sweeney (Spring, Texas) led all players with nine kills for the Pioneers and added two block assists and a pair of digs. Outside hitter Olivia Teske (Minneapolis, Minn.) put away seven kills on a .455 hitting mark to go with a pair of digs and a block assist. Setter Nathalie Pak (Lexington, Mass.) directed the offense with 12 assists in addition to a match-high four aces, three digs and a kill and defensive specialist Gabby Beckman (Aurora, Colo.) scooped up 13 digs and tacked on four aces.

Wheaton held an 11-8 lead in the opening set following a kill from senior middle hitter Bailey Madrzyk (Barrington, Ill.), but Smith put together a 12-3 run to take a 20-14 lead. Teske led the charge with three kills. The Pioneers scored five of the final six points to take the frame.

The Lyons were within 11-9 midway through the second session, before the home team closed out the frame with a 14-4 stretch.

The Pioneers never trailed in the final set and established a 7-2 lead early in the set and led by five or more points for the remainder of the frame.
