Box Score NORTON, Mass. – Senior right side hitter Bailey Madrzyk (Barrington, Ill.) put down a match-high 14 kills to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's volleyball team over visiting University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-22) this evening at Emerson Gymnasium on the campus of Wheaton in Norton, Mass. The Lyons improve to 1-0, while the Corsairs fall to 0-1 in the season opener for both teams.
Madrzyk committed just one attack error and hit a blistering .650 for the evening to lead Wheaton's .366 attack percentage. She also added two block assists. First year middle hitter Hollis Hanson (Parker, Colo.) swung for six kills on a .500 hitting mark and added three aces and a pair of blocks, while classmate Julia Wingler (Fuquay Varina, N.C.) swung for six kills in two sets and hit .444 to go with a block assist. Senior libero Sophie Wilhelm (Saunderstown, R.I.) got down for 14 digs and senior setter Hannah George (Duxbury, Mass.) set for 24 assists, picked up six digs and served up an ace.
Junior middle hitter Maggie Sullivan (Acton, Mass.) led UMass Dartmouth with seven kills on a .385 hitting percentage in addition to three blocks, while junior outside hitter Devon Laing (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) made just one attack miscue and put away six kills for a .333 attack clip.
The Corsairs held identical 22-20 leads in both the second and third sets, before the Lyons ripped off five straight points to end each set to earn the match victory.
UMass Dartmouth held an early 4-3 edge in the opening set, before Wheaton went on a 19-6 run to take a 22-10 advantage behind three kills from Madrzyk. The Corsairs countered with seven of the next nine points to pull to within 24-17, but Madrzyk put down the final point of the session to give the home team a 1-0 match lead.
The Lyons jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the middle set, before Sullivan spiked for a pair of kills to lead a 5-1 spurt to pull UMD even at 10-10. The Corsairs later took a 22-20 lead following six unanswered points, but Wheaton scored the final five points of the set, including an ace from George and a kill from Madrzyk to give the home team the winning point.
The Lyons started quickly in the third set as well, taking a six-point cushion at 12-6, behind three kills from Wingler. UMass Dartmouth sailed back with eight straight points on junior middle hitter Marley Alexander's (Ashburn, Va.) serve, including a pair of aces from her, to take a 14-12 margin. The visitors maintained their lead at 22-20, before deja vu set in and Wheaton closed out the evening with the last five points, including a pair of kills from Wingler.
Wheaton returns to action with a pair of matches on Saturday, September 3 with the first contest coming against Emmanuel College (Mass.) at 11:00 a.m. in Emerson Gymnasium, while the Corsairs host Clark University (Mass.) on September 7 at 6:00 p.m.
