Box Score NORTON, Mass. -- First year second base Erica Piercey (North Branford, Conn.) knocked in two runs and senior starting pitcher Emma Candelaria (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) allowed just one unearned run to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) softball team to a 5-1 win over visiting Emerson College this afternoon in game two of a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference doubleheader to complete a sweep at the Clark Softball Field on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass. The Lyons have won seven of their last nine and improve to 19-13 overall and 8-6 in league play, while the Lions fall to 15-17 and 2-12.
Wheaton scored four times in the bottom of the third of game two to set the tone for its second win.
Piercey drove in two runs, going 2-3 with a double for the Lyons, while first year right fielder Jillian Rohon (Southington, Conn.) as 1-1 with a double, a walk and two RBI. Senior shortstop Katelyn Barton (Andover, N.H.) was 1-3 with a walk, a run batted in and a run scored. Candelaria earned the win to improve to 10-4 after yielding one unearned run on five hits and two walks to go with three strikeouts in seven complete innings.
First year Mackenzie Rice (Severna Park, Md.) paced the Lions' offense, going 2-2 with a walk and a stolen base, while catcher Sam Zannotti (Dudley, Mass.) was 1-3 with a run scored. First year starting pitcher Jessica Gomez (West Chester, Pa.) (8-9) gave up five runs (one earned) on six hits and five walks and struck out five in six innings for Emerson.
Wheaton put four runs on the board in the third inning and scored its first run with the benefit of two errors. Rohon later doubled in a pair of runs and Piercey followed with a one-out RBI single to give the Lyons a 4-0 lead.
Wheaton added an insurance run in the fifth when first year Emme Conley (Riverside, R.I.) led off with a single up the middle and scored ahead of a Piercey double for a 5-0 margin for the home team.
The Lions cracked the scoring column for the first time in nearly 12 innings with a run in the top of the seventh. Zannotti singled to center, stole second base and later scored on a two-out error to make it 5-1.
The Lyons return to action on Friday, April 29 when they head to New London, Conn. to take on United States Coast Guard Academy for a 3:00 p.m. twinbill, while Emerson hosts Wellesley College on the same day for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
