Candelaria, Zito Lead Softball to 6-1 Win and Sweep over Bridgewater State

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Senior starting pitcher Emma Candelaria (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) game up one unearned run in a complete game and first year center fielder Juliette Zito (Woodbridge, Conn.) collected four hits to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) softball team to a 6-1 win and sweep over host Bridgewater State University this afternoon at Alumni Park in Bridgewater, Mass. The Lyons win their fourth straight and improve to 8-6, while the Bears fall to 7-10-1.

Wheaton scored at least one run in each of the first four innings.

Zito registered her first career four-hit game and belted her second home run of the day in as many games, while driving in a pair of runs. Candelaria (4-2) allowed just four hits and a walk to go with two strikeouts to earn the win for the Lyons. First year right fielder Jillian Rohon (Southington, Conn.) smacked a pair of doubles as part of a 3-4 effort for her second three-hit outing of the day. She also knocked in a run. Sophomore catcher Jill Ceddia (Hopkinton, Mass.) contributed by going 2-4 with a double and a run scored.

Senior left fielder Emma Healy (Plymouth, Mass.) led Bridgewater State, going 1-2 with a double and an RBI. Senior starting pitcher Laura Hatch (1-5) (Middleboro, Mass.) suffered the loss, giving up four runs (two earned) on three hits and struck out a batter in two innings of work.

Wheaton scored two runs in both the first and second frames and single runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 6-0 lead.

The Lyons capitalized on a pair of Bears' miscues in the top of the first to score two runs and take a 2-0 margin. Wheaton added two more runs in the second when Ceddia doubled and scored ahead of Zito's second homer of the year to give the Lyons a 4-0 lead.

Wheaton added a run in the third when senior shortstop Katelyn Barton (Andover, N.H.) cracked a double and later scored when Rohon roped a two-out double to left center. The Lyons tacked on another run on four hits in the fourth. Ceddia opened the frame with a single, followed by singles from Zito and sophomore second base Bryanna Agan (Averill Park, N.Y.) to load the bases. Senior first base Tristan Keller (Plymouth, N.H.) came through with a run-scoring single up the middle to keep the bases loaded with one out and give the visitors a 6-0 cushion. First year relief pitcher McKayla Cusack (West Haven, Conn.) limited the damage for the Bears, retiring the final two batters to get out of the jam.

Bridgewater State got some help to score its only run of the game in the sixth. First year Emily Marcotte (North Dighton, Mass.) struck out to lead off the inning, but reached on a passed ball. Healy delivered with a double to plate Marcotte with the lone run of the game for the Bears. Candelaria induced a foul pop-up and a fly ball from the next two batters to end the threat for Wheaton.

The Lyons return to action on Saturday, April 2 when they travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference foe Clark University at 12:00 p.m., while Bridgewater State hosts Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on the same day at 1:00 p.m.
