Zito, Rohon Lead Softball over Bridgewater State, 11-5, in Game One

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- First years Juliette Zito (Woodbridge, Conn.) and Jillian Rohon (Southington, Conn.) each rapped out three hits and knocked in three runs apiece to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) softball team to an 11-5 comeback victory over host Bridgewater State University this afternoon in the first game of a double-header at Alumni Park in Bridgewater, Mass. The Lyons improve to 7-6, while the Bears fall to 7-9-1.

Wheaton faced a 5-3 deficit, before scoring six times in the top of the fifth to take the lead for good.

Zito was 3-5 with her first collegiate home run and scored twice, while Rohon was 3-4 with a double and two runs scored to pace a 12-hit attack for the Lyons. Sophomore Lindsey Oliveira (Westport, Mass.) scored three times and was 2-4 at the plate for Wheaton. Sophomore reliever Sofia Knopf (Norton, Mass.) hurled three and two-thirds innings of two-hit relief and issued just one walk, while fanning two batters to gain the win and improve to 2-3.

Sophomore first base Morgan Cournoyer (Burrillville, R.I.) smashed a solo homer for Bridgewater State, while sophomore Madison Flamme (Bethel, Conn.) was 3-3 with a run scored at the plate. First year third base Emily Marcotte (North Dighton, Mass.) scored a run and was 2-4. Senior starting pitcher Kelley Reichert (Milford, Mass.) fell to 4-3 and didn't get much support from the defense, allowing nine runs (two earned) on 10 hits and three walks to go with three strikeouts in four and two-thirds innings of work.

Oliveira reached on a two-out error to keep Wheaton alive in the fifth, while down by a pair of runs. Rohon singled up the middle to drive in a run and pull the Lyons to within a run, before sophomores Amanda Bogardus (Saco, Maine) and Allison Weston (West Islip, N.Y.) each came through with RBI singles to give Wheaton a 6-5 lead. Zito made the error hurt when she crushed  a pitch over the left field fence for a three-run homer and a 9-5 Lyons' lead.

Oliveira started another two-out rally for Wheaton in the sixth with a single to center, before Rohon followed with a run-scoring single through the left side to bring in the 10th Lyons' run. Wheaton added another run on an error to take an 11-5 advantage, which was enough for the victory.

The Lyons got on the board first when Zito opened the contest with a single up the middle and later scored on the front end of a double steal. The Bears knotted the game in the bottom of the second on Cournoyer's fourth long ball of the season.

Bridgewater State took a 2-1 edge in the third, but a two-run fourth gave Wheaton a 3-2 lead. Oliveira singled and came around to score ahead of a double down the left field line off the bat of Rohon to tie the score. Rohon later scored on an error to give the visitors the lead.

The Bears scored three times in the bottom of the frame to take a 5-3 margin. Reichert drew a leadoff walk and Flamme and Marcotte each reached on bunt singles to load the bases for the home team. Senior shortstop Megan Sharon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) followed with an RBI single to right field and graduate student center fielder Alexandra Ruprecht (Kingston, Mass.) worked a base-loaded walk to push another run across for Bridgewater State. The Bears scored their final run with the benefit of an error.
