Softball Drops Game Two, 7-3, in UMass Dartmouth Sweep

DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) softball team dropped the second game, 7-3, as host University of Massachusetts Dartmouth completed a sweep at the UMassD Softball Field today in Dartmouth, Mass. The Lyons fall to 4-6 on the year, while the Corsairs bump their record to 12-2-1.

All of the game's runs came in three half innings, including a six-run third for UMass Dartmouth.

Senior first base Tristan Keller (Plymouth, N.H.) was 2-3 with a run scored for Wheaton, while sophomore second base Bryanna Agan (Averill Park, N.Y.) knocked in a pair of runs with a single in three at-bats. Sophomore third base Lindsey Oliveira (Westport, Mass.) was also 1-3 and drove in a run. Sophomore starting pitcher Sofia Knopf (Norton, Mass.) (1-3) was saddled with the defeat after giving up five runs (four earned) on three hits and three walks to go with three strikeouts. Senior reliever Sarah Pritchard (Malta, N.Y.) limited the damage, throwing three and a third innings of two-hit scoreless relief, while issuing a free pass and striking out a batter.

Fifth-year senior Jill Richards (Kingston, Mass.) hit a home run and knocked in three runs and senior first base Averi Soares (New Bedford, Mass.) was 2-2 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI for the Corsairs. Junior third base Victoria Rossetti (Valley Stream, N.Y.) doubled and drove in a run. Sophomore right-hander Kaitlyn Shirshac (Enfield, Conn.) improved to a perfect 6-0 after hurling seven complete innings and allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk, while fanning four batters.

The Lyons scored three runs on five hits in the top of the first to open the game with a 3-0 lead. First year right fielder Emme Conley (Riverside, R.I.), Keller and senior shortstop Katelyn Barton (Andover, N.H.) reached on consecutive singles to lead the bases for Oliveira, who singled to left to drive in a run and keep the sacks full. Agan followed with a two-run single down the left field line to plate two more runs and give Wheaton a 3-0 lead.

UMass Dartmouth got a run back in the bottom of the inning with the benefit of an error to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Junior left fielder Lynsie Miracle (Richland, Wash.) drew a leadoff walk and fifth-year senior shortstop Leah Major (Fairhaven, Mass.) followed with a one-out single before Soares singled to right field to bring home Miracle with the Corsairs' second run. Richards struck the decisive blow with a three-run home run over the left field fence to give the home team a 5-3 lead. Sophomore third base Hailey Lyons (Hayden, Idaho) kept the pressure on with a single, before Rossetti roped a double down the left field line to bring Lyons around to score the sixth run. Rossetti later scored on a wild pitch to give UMass Dartmouth a 7-3 lead.

Shirshac kept the Lyons in check for the remainder of the game with just one runner advancing to second in the final four innings of play.

Wheaton returns to action on Sunday when it heads to Dudley, Mass. to take on Nichols College for a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m., while the Corsairs travel to Babson Park, Mass. on March 31 for a twinbill with Babson College at 3:00 p.m.
