Sophomore third base Lindsey Oliveira (Westport, Mass.) cracked a double, and first year center fielder Juliette Zito (Woodbridge, Conn.), senior first base Tristan Keller (Plymouth, N.H.), senior Sarah Pritchard (Malta, N.Y.) and first year second base Erica Piercey (North Branford, Conn.) each singled for Wheaton, while senior pinch-runner Lilly Laganiere (Rochester, N.H.) scored the winning run. Knopf was outstanding in the circle for the Lyons, hurling a complete game seven innings, while issuing two walks and striking out seven to improve to 1-2 on the season.
Junior starting pitcher Taryan Barrick-Wessels (Ackley, Iowa) (4-2) gave up just one unearned run on five hits and a walk, while fanning five batters for Simpson. She was also 1-3 at the plate. Junior catcher Maddie Luderman (Bellevue, Neb.) was 2-3 with a double.
Wheaton scored the only run of the game in the top of the fifth inning. First year second base Erica Piercey (North Branford, Conn.) reached on an error to lead off the frame and was lifted for Laganiere, who stepped in as the pinch-runner. Laganiere moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by first year right fielder Jillian Rohon (Southington, Conn.), before Zito belted a fly ball to right field that wasn't handled to score Laganiere with the game's only run.
The Lyons looked to add an insurance run in the seventh when Oliveira launched a leadoff double, but was later thrown out on the plate when trying to score on a single off the bat of Piercey.
The Lyons return to action on Friday, March 25 when they travel to Dartmouth, Mass. to take on University of Massachusetts Dartmouth for a twinbill beginning at 3:00 p.m., while the Storm Hamline University later today in Leesburg, Fla.
