Box Score LEESBURG, Fla. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) softball team was defeated by Loras College, 3-1, this morning at The Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex in Leesburg, Fla. The Lyons fall to 2-4 on the season, while the Duhawks improve to a perfect 9-0.
The teams combined for just six hits in the well-pitched ballgame.
Senior Sarah Pritchard (Malta, N.Y.) led Wheaton with a double in three at-bats at the plate, while senior first base Tristan Keller (Plymouth, N.H.) knocked in a run and senior Lily Laganiere (Rochester, N.H.) scored a run. Senior right-handed pitcher Emma Candelaria (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) (2-2) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks to go with a strikeout. Pritchard was up to the task with three innings of one-hit relief that included a pair of strikeouts.
Sophomore shortstop Claire Peachey (Jefferson, Wis.) was 1-2 with a double and a run batted in for Loras, while junior right fielder Abby Jones (Trevor, Wis.) went 2-3 with a run scored. First year righty Ashlyn Hemm (Port Byron, Ill.) hurled a complete game and brought a no-hitter into the seventh inning before giving up a run. She improves to 7-0 after allowing just one hit and a walk in addition to striking out 13.
The Duhawks received timely hitting in the bottom of the second to get on the board with the first run of the game. Hemm laced a two-out single to center field and came around to score on the double by Peachey.
Loras tacked on two more insurance runs in the third when senior outfielder Ellie Schill (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) opened the frame with an infield single and Jones reached on a bunt single that put both runners on second and third with no outs. First year outfielder Morgan Machovec (DeWitt, Iowa) plated Schill with a sacrifice fly and junior Jadyn Anderson (St. Ansgar, Iowa) followed with another sacrifice fly to bring home Jones with the Duhawks' third run to make it 3-0.
Pritchard made the Lyons' first hit a good one with a one-out double in the top of the seventh. Laganiere pinch ran for Pritchard, took third base on a wild pitch and scored on a Keller ground out to shortstop to pull Wheaton to within 3-1, but Hemm fanned the last Lyons' batter to end the game.
Wheaton returns to action to take on Wesleyan University (Conn.) at 11:45 a.m. in Leesburg, while Loras plays Babson College at 11:45 as well.
