Women's Basketball Downs Mount Holyoke, 50-31

NORTON, Mass. -- The Wheaton College women's basketball team held visiting Mount Holyoke College to just 22.8% (13-57) shooting in a 50-31 victory this evening in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference action at Emerson Gymnasium on the campus of Wheaton in Norton, Mass. The Lyons improve to 8-14 overall and finish their league slate with a 3-7 mark, while the MHC Lyons fall to 2-15 and 0-9.

Wheaton honored its three seniors, Lena Carr (Northfield, Mass.), Alexis Romer (Delray Beach, Fla,) and Sadie Shore (Portsmouth, N.H.) prior to the game.

Wheaton also experienced a tough shooting night, owning a 36.7% (22-60) clip from the field. The Lyons still dominated the paint, outscoring their guests, 26-8, in the paint, while holding a 48-36 rebounding advantage.

First year guard Abby Fernandes (Assonet, Mass.) led the home team with 10 points and seven rebounds to go with a steal, while Romer chipped in with nine points on a trio of three-pointers in addition to six boards, three assists and a steal. Shore netted eight points to go with seven rebounds, four assists and a blocked shot. Carr drew a start for Wheaton and pulled down a rebound in 14 minutes of action.

First year guard Cal McGonagle (Yarmouth, Maine) posted a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds, while shooting 6-11 from the floor. She also added an assist and a steal. Senior forward Annika Brooks (Portland, Maine) finished a point shy of a double-double with nine and added 10 rebounds in addition to a steal.

Sophomore guard Marley Berano (Lady Lake, Fla.) knocked down a three-pointer to pull Mount Holyoke even at 5-5 for the only tie of the game at 8:52 of the opening quarter. Neither team was able to score over the next 2:20, before Shore converted a pair of free throws as part of a 7-0 run to give Wheaton a 12-5 advantage with 5:25 to play in the opening quarter. 

McGonagle hit a jumper to pull MHC to within 12-9 at the 2:33 mark, before the home Lyons scored the final four points of the quarter for a 16-9 margin. 

Wheaton outscored Mount Holyoke, 18-5, in the second quarter, including five points from junior forward Rian Sachs (Brunswick, Maine), to take a 34-14 lead at halftime.

Both teams went cold from the floor and were scoreless in the opening 2:18 of the third quarter before a lay-up from Brooks. Wheaton scored eight of the next nine points to take a 42-17 lead with 2:22 to play in the quarter. MHC closed out the period with five of the last seven points to cut the deficit to 44-22 after three quarters of play. 

Wheaton owned a 48-26 margin with 6:34 to go in the game, but did not score over the next 3:06 before Fernandes drained a jumper at the 3:01 mark of the fourth quarter to give the home team its final points and a 50-29 lead. Sophomore forward Nicole Lutalo scored the last points of the night with a lay-up for the visitors with 16 ticks left in the game.

Wheaton will be in action again in its season finale on Friday, February 18 when it travels to Salem, Mass. to take on Salem State University at 6:00 p.m., while Mount Holyoke hosts NEWMAC foe Springfield College on February 19 at 2:00 p.m. in its final game of the season.
