Box Score NORTON, Mass. – First year forward Regan Keyter (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) netted 14 points and sophomore guard Riley Sprague (Jamestown, R.I.) added 13 points to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's basketball team to a 67-46 victory over visiting Lasell University this evening in the season opener for both teams at Emerson Gymnasium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons improve to 1-0 on the season, while the Lasers fall to 0-1.
Wheaton shot 44.6% (25-56) from the floor, while holding Lasell to just 28.3% (15-53) for the game.
Keyter was 6-10 from the field and pulled down four rebounds and Sprague was 5-10 shooting off the bench for Wheaton, including 2-3 from three-point range and came up with a steal. Sophomore guard Greta Minos (Boston, Mass.) pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to go with five assists and four points and first year Nasha Arnold (North Reading, Mass.) grabbed seven rebounds and scored seven points to go with two assists and a pair of steals for the Lyons.
Sophomore guard Juju Nealy (Fitchburg, Mass.) led the Lasers with 14 points in addition to two assists and a steal, while first year guard Brenna Graber (Troy, N.Y.) netted seven points, pulled down five rebounds and made a steal.
Wheaton led 32-23 at halftime, but put together a 20-6 run in the third quarter to take a 52-29 lead and effectively put the game out of reach. Keyter and junior forward Emma Kiernan (Wayland, Mass.) each contributed with four points during the run. The Lyons maintained their lead throughout the fourth quarter with the Lasers getting no closer than within 17 points the rest of the way.
The teams played within two points of each other through the first half of the opening quarter and Lasell took a 10-8 lead following a three-pointer from Nealy with 5:02 to play in the quarter. Wheaton went on a 12-2 run, including six points from Keyter, to take a 20-12 lead with 1:45 showing on the first quarter clock. The Lasers answered with five straight points, including a three-pointer from Nealy, to close to within 20-17 before the end of the period.
Graduate student guard Brooke Damboise (Bolton, Conn.) later knocked down a trifecta to pull Lasell to within 25-23 at the 4:37 mark of the second quarter. It was the last points of the period for the visitors as the Lyons reeled off seven straight points, including a trey from Sprague, to take a 32-23 cushion into the intermission.
Wheaton returns to the court on Friday, November 11 when it heads to Wenham, Mass. to take on Gordon College in the first round of the Gordon Classic at 7:30 p.m., while the Lasers host University of Maine Augusta on November 12 at 12:00 p.m.
