Brusso Lifts Men's Soccer over WPI, 2-1, to Advance to NEWMAC Semifinals

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. — Senior midfielder Jack Brusso (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored with 20:19 to play to give the fifth-seeded Wheaton College (Mass.) men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over host number four seed Worcester Polytechnic Institute today in the Quarterfinal Round of the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at H. Carr Field at Alumni Stadium in Worcester, Mass.

The Lyons are unbeaten in 10 of their last 11 and improve to 9-4-6 on the season. They advance to the NEWMAC Semifinals to play top-seeded Babson College on Thursday, November 3 in Babson Park, Mass. The Engineers fall to 7-5-6.

Wheaton received the game-winner in the 70th minute of play when junior forward Luke Strange (Portland, Ore.) lifted a free kick from the right sideline to the front of the goalmouth, where Brusso was there with a flying header that ended up in the right corner of the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season.

The Lyons owned a 17-13 shot advantage, including 11-5 in the scoreless first half, and also held a 7-3 margin in corner kicks.

Wheaton got on the board first in the 56th minute to take a 1-0 lead. First year defender Leao Nelson (Bar Harbor, Maine) collected the ball near the left side of the goal mouth, where he slid a cross to classmate Joey Everett (Danbury, Conn.), who sent a short pass in front of the net to a waiting Strange for a shot into the back of the right side of the net for his fourth goal of the year at 55:11. The assist for Everett was his fifth of the season to tie Strange for the team lead.

WPI knotted the game just over 10 minutes later when senior midfielder Luke Savoie (Mansfield, Mass.) sent a long cross from the left side of the endline to the goalmouth, where junior back Mason Perham (Hampden, Mass.) tapped it in for his first collegiate goal. The score came with 20:19 left to play to snap a scoreless streak of 430:04.

Senior keeper Cam Millington (Fairfield, Conn.) stopped three shots for the Lyons, while senior goalie Roe Hendrick (Nashua, N.H.) made five saves for the Engineers.
