Wheaton held a 16-14 shot advantage, including 9-7 in the decisive second half.
Senior Richter Brzeski (Los Angeles, Calif.) sent a corner kick into the front of the net for the Engineers, where a shot from senior Alex Weiler (Portland, Ore.) was saved by Lyon senior keeper Cam Millington (Fairfield, Conn.), but the rebound went to sophomore Jack Minor (Boca Raton, Fla.), whose shot rang off the post. Senior John Flynn (Ashburn, Va.) was then able to retrieve the loose ball and rifle a shot under the crossbar at 85:24 to give MIT the 2-1 lead.
Wheaton got on the board first in the 19th minute of play to take a 1-0 lead. The Lyons took advantage of a free-kick opportunity at 18:46 when sophomore forward Alasdair Ferrier (Concord, N.H.) sent the ball into the top corner of the net for the score and his league-leading ninth goal of the season.
Just over 10 minutes later at 29:38, MIT senior Rami Bikdash (Oak Ridge, N.C.) took advantage of his own free-kick opportunity and sent the ball into the upper corner of the goal to tie the match in the 30th minute at 1-1.
Millington made back-to-back saves for Wheaton on senior Hendrik Mayer (Montville, N.J.) and junior Garrett Robinson (Winfield, Ill.) to keep the game tied.
The Lyons looked to take the lead in the 66th minute, but the goal was waved off due to a handball. Wheaton continued to pressure the MIT defense after Ferrier's shot was saved by senior keeper Paarth Desai (Lawrenceville, Ga.), and sophomore Joseph Gross (Miami, Fla.) cleared a Niall Blackadar (Warwick, R.I.) shot out of the goal to keep the game tied.
Desai made two big saves in the final minute to secure the victory for the Engineers.
Millington finished with five saves for the Lyons, while Desai turned away 10 shots for the Engineers.
