Henn Leads Women's Volleyball over Framingham State, 3-0, to Complete Tri-Match Sweep

NORTON, Mass -- First year outside hitter Celina Henn (Atwater, Calif.) put down 10 kills to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-6, 25-22, 25-17) victory over visiting Framingham State University this afternoon at Emerson Gymnasium on the campus of Wheaton in Norton, Mass.

The Lyons improve to 7-7 on the season, while Framingham State falls to 10-7.

Wheaton hit .455 or better in two of the three sets vs. the Rams and ended the match with a robust mark of .356.

Henn finished with a .238 hitting percentage for the Lyons, while senior outside hitter Emily Hickey (Kennebunk, Maine) spiked for eight kills behind a .368 hitting clip  to go with a pair of digs. Junior outside hitter Annah Shaheen (Portsmouth, N.H.) added seven kills, five digs and an ace and senior libero Sophie Wilhelm (Saunderstown, R.I.) got down for 18 digs. Senior setter Hannah George (Duxbury, Mass.) (24) and junior setter Julianna Flack (St. Petersburg, Fla.) (18) combined for 42 assists in the match. 

First year right side hitter Mya Jones (Scarborough, Maine) chipped in for the Rams with four kills and two block assists, while junior middle hitter Hailey Sanders (Franklin, Mass.) put away four kills and added a block assist. Junior libero Emily Flaherty (Milford, N.H.) came up with seven digs in two sets for Framingham State.

Wheaton scored the first six points of the first set and jumped out to a 12-2 cushion, fueled by three kills from senior right side hitter Bailey Madrzyk (Barrington, Ill.). Framingham State put consecutive points together for the first time in the frame to cut the deficit to 12-4, but the Lyons reeled off 10 unanswered points, including three kills from first year outside hitter Sydney Lyon (Weston, Conn.) and one of four aces in the match for junior defensive specialist Isabel Coca (San Marcos, Calif.), to take a 22-4 advantage. Wheaton took the set, 25-6, in its most lopsided set of the season. 

The Rams were much more competitive in the second frame, holding a 13-12 edge midway through the set. The Lyons ripped off five straight points to take a 17-13 margin, but Framingham State matched the burst with seven unanswered points to claim a 20-17 lead. The Rams clung to a 21-20 edge, but Wheaton put tallied five of the last six points of the set to take a 2-0 match lead.

The teams were deadlocked at 10-10 in the third set, before the Lyons put some space between themselves and their guests with a 10-3 run to take a 20-13 lead. Shaheen put down a pair of kills and served up an ace during the stretch for the home team. Wheaton maintained its margin for the remainder of the frame and took the set, 25-17, to win the match. 

The Lyons return to action on Tuesday, October 4 when they host Wellesley College at 7:00 p.m. in Emerson Gymnasium for a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference contest. Framingham State hosts New England College on the same night at 6:00 p.m.
