Madrzyk Leads Women's Volleyball over Roger Williams, 3-1

NORTON, Mass. -- Senior right side hitter Bailey Madrzyk (Barrington, Ill.) spiked for a match-high 13 kills to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-19) victory over visiting Roger Williams University this morning in the first contest of a tri-match at Emerson Gymnasium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass. 

The Lyons improve to 6-7 on the season, while the Hawks fall to 4-9.

Wheaton served for 18 aces in four sets vs. Roger Williams, while owning a .195 hitting percentage. 

Madrzyk committed just one hitting error to compile a .429 attack percentage to go with three total blocks for the Lyons. Junior outside hitter Annah Shaheen (Portsmouth, N.H.) finished the match with 10 kills and a .292 hitting clip to go with nine digs and a block assist. First year outside hitter Celina Henn (Atwater, Calif.) registered 8.5 points with four kills, four aces and a block assist to go with seven digs and senior setter Hannah George (Duxbury, Mass.) set for 25 assists and added 14 digs. 

First year outside hitter Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, Conn.) led the Hawks with 10 kills and added three digs, while first year middle hitter Lily Winsten (Rockledge, Fla.) tallied seven points with two solo blocks, four block assists, a pair of aces and a kill. Sophomore libero Soraya Bussatti (Arecibo, Puerto Rico) picked up a match-high 19 digs and served for an ace.

Wheaton held an 8-7 edge early in the opening set, before Roger Williams went on a 7-2 run to take a 14-9 lead. The Lyons answered with an 8-2 stretch, including three kills from Madrzyk, to take a 17-16 lead. It was the Lyons last lead of the set. The teams were tied at 19-19, before the Hawks closed out the frame with a 6-2 run.

Madrzyk was the catalyst to a fast start in the the second set for Wheaton, putting down three kills in addition to a trio of aces from junior defensive specialist Isabel Coca (San Marcos, Calif.) to fuel a 9-1 start. The Lyons were never threatened in the frame and increased their margin to 23-11. The Hawks ripped off six unanswered points, including two kills from Jackson and a pair of aces from first year Emma Bosco (North Andover, Mass.), to pull to within 23-17. The teams matched points for the remainder of the set until Wheaton took it at 25-19 to knot the match at one set apiece.

The teams were tied at 13-13 midway throuth the third set, before Wheaton scored five straight points, including a pair of aces from Henn, to take an 18-13 advantage. The home team maintained its lead and closed out the set with the last four points to earn a 25-17 set win and a 2-1 match lead.

The teams played close throughout the fourth set and the Lyons held a slim 16-15 lead before scoring seven of the next eight points to take a 23-16 lead. Senior libero Sophie Wilhelm (Saunderstown, R.I.) finished off Roger Williams with an ace to win the set and the match.
